Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Fish genetics breeding is a process that remolds heritable traits to obtain neotype and improved varieties. It can achieve the purpose of genetic improvement by artificially selecting the desirable genetic character or by integrating or altering the existing genetic character. This Special Issue focuses on the latest advances and insights in fish genetics breeding.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for researchers and scientists to publish original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on topics related to fish genetics breeding. The journal aims to advance our understanding of biological technologies in fish genetic breeding such as selective breeding, integration breeding, and modification breeding. Additionally, fish genetics and breeding seeks to promote research on fish varieties with desirable traits such as rapid growth, high meat quality and strong stress resistance, and the applications of fish genetic breeding research to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the aquaculture industry. By publishing high-quality research in fish genetics breeding, scientists can contribute to the scientific community and advance our understanding of fish genetics breeding.

As the guest editor of this Special Issue, I would like to invite researchers, scientists, and experts in the field to contribute their expertise and knowledge to the journal. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on topics related to fish genetics breeding, including but not limited to the following:

  1. Latest advances and insights in traditional selective breeding.
  2. Latest advances and insights in molecular marker-assisted selective breeding.
  3. Latest advances and insights in integration breeding.
  4. Latest advances and insights in modification breeding.
  5. Research on genetics breeding for economic traits of fish.
  6. Research on genetics breeding for stress resistance of fish.
  7. Research on genetics breeding for disease resistance of fish.
  8. Applications of fish genetic breeding research to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the aquaculture industry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The Bagridae fish family holds significant economic value and enjoys a high demand in the commercial market due to its desirable characteristics, such as delicious meat, fewer muscle spines, and a pleasing flavor. In recent years, the Bagridae has experienced rapid development in the seed industry in response to industry demands. Researchers have conducted extensive studies on genetic breeding in the Bagridae, employing a comprehensive breeding approach that combines conventional breeding techniques with innovative new technologies and cooperative efforts. In this review, we present an overview of the market situation and discuss various breeding processes applied to the Bagridae, including selective breeding, genetic engineering breeding, cell engineering breeding, molecular marker-assisted breeding, and hybrid breeding. Additionally, we focus on introducing the cultivation methods for two new Bagridae varieties. Furthermore, we explore and summarize the breeding conditions, genetic background, heterosis, comprehensive breeding technology, stress resistance, and metabolic nutrition of hybrid Bagridae catfishes. Overall, noticeable heterosis has been observed in the breeding of the hybrid yellow catfish “Huangyou-1”, which exhibits promising market prospects and economic benefits for aquaculture. Our study aims to underscore the importance of harnessing the heterosis of catfish, particularly the Pelteobagrus and Bagridae species. Consequently, this review provides an update on the current available information regarding the seed industry of the Bagridae fish family. Full article
