Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent theoretical and experimental developments in advanced multifunctional coatings as single or multilayers covering flexible polymer-based substrates are among the most highly exploited research systems in the field of promotional health, creation of new kinds of composites, and construction for engineering applications. Oriented primarily for antimicrobial functions, photooxidation, thermal management, and durability in demanding environmental conditions will be useful for different applications, ranging from those in the aerospace, medical, automotive, and chemical industries. Driven by the current state of knowledge and the need to maintain structural material integrity and reliability of assets under harsh environments, a renewed impetus towards ensuring the durability of new nanostructured coating systems has been offered. There is a huge demand for experimental, theoretical, and modeling activities as well.

The manufacture, design, and test of multi-functional materials (e.g., metals, metal oxides, expanded graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, conductive polymers, etc.) that are capable of serving as special layers (organic polymers, composite materials, ceramic materials, etc.), or a combination of such materials, provide unprecedented functionality and opportunities for multifunctional coatings protecting the mainly flexible fibrous structures.

This Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers on the following concepts:

  1. Theoretical and experimental research, knowledge, and new ideas in health protection, antimicrobial functions, photooxidation, thermal management, durability, and preventive coating mechanisms.
  2. Recent developments in multi-functional organic, inorganic, and hybrid coatings.
  3. Coatings produced by different processes, including, but not limited to, additive manufacturing processes, thermal spray, laser and plasma processing, CVD, electro and electroless plating, etc.
  4. Experimental study and processing of high-performance coatings with exposure to higher temperatures, higher stress, and other environmental applications.
  5. Understanding the mechanisms of attachment through bonding between flexible material and coating.
  6. The latest developments in test methods considering the interplay between mechanical, chemical, and electrical interactions and the ability to predict performance and/or reliability (emphasis on valid, accelerated performance tests and the relation between test technique and field performance data).
  7. Computer modeling, application of AI and simulation to predict coating properties, performance, durability, and reliability in service environments.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
