Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The urgent global demand for environmental remediation and energy transition has propelled photocatalytic coatings to the forefront of materials innovation. These dynamic surface engineering solutions harness light-driven reactions to address critical sustainability challenges, from air/water purification to renewable energy conversion. This Special Issue highlights transformative breakthroughs in photocatalytic coating technologies that bridge fundamental research with scalable environmental applications.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Advanced Synthesis Methods: Emerging fabrication techniques (atomic layer deposition, plasma-enhanced CVD, aerosol-assisted sol–gel) for precision control of photocatalytic architectures; hybrid manufacturing integrating 3D printing with photocatalytic nanoparticle deposition.
- Next-Generation Photocatalytic Systems: Visible-light-responsive coatings (nitrogen-doped TiO₂, perovskite oxides); Z-scheme heterojunction designs; self-cleaning superhydrophobic hybrids; plasmonic-enhanced nanostructures for broadband light harvesting.
- Multifunctional Performance Optimization: Dual-action coatings combining photocatalysis with antifouling/antimicrobial properties; mechanically robust nanocomposites for outdoor applications; substrate-adhesion enhancement strategies.
- Cross-Sector Applications: Environmental: VOC degradation coatings for urban infrastructure; photocatalytic concrete for NOx reduction; solar-driven water splitting films. Energy: Photoelectrochemical coatings for hydrogen generation; self-powered air purification systems. Biomedical: Light-activated antibacterial surfaces for healthcare settings.
- Sustainability Metrics and Scalability: Lifecycle analysis of photocatalytic coating systems; low-temperature synthesis for reduced carbon footprint; recyclable substrate-coating interfaces; industrial-scale deposition technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
