Emergency Surgery: Clinical Practice and Technical Advances

Emergency surgery remains a cornerstone of acute clinical care, operating at the critical intersection of rapid decision-making, complex physiology, and urgent technical execution. Globally, acute care surgery faces escalating pressures driven by aging populations, multimorbidity, and the demand for optimized hospital throughput. Concurrently, rapid technological evolution—spanning advanced diagnostic algorithms, minimally invasive techniques, and intraoperative decision-support tools—presents unprecedented opportunities to refine patient selection, reduce postoperative complications, and improve overall surgical outcomes.

Bridging the gap between technological innovation and pragmatic bedside execution is crucial for advancing the standard of care in acute surgical settings. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to emergency surgery, trauma management, and perioperative acute care. We welcome high-quality contributions addressing innovative diagnostic pathways, novel operative procedures, clinical management algorithms, and evidence-based reviews that inform both academic discourse and real-world surgical practice.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Advanced minimally invasive techniques in acute care surgery (laparoscopy and robotic applications);
• Management of severe intra-abdominal infections;
• Open abdomen management;
• Modern strategies in non-operative and operative management in both trauma and emergency general surgery;
• Optimization of damage control surgery and resuscitation protocols for both trauma and emergency general surgery patients;
• Surgical rescue;
• Technical innovations, intraoperative imaging, and technological tools in emergency surgery;
• Biomarkers, point-of-care ultrasound, diagnostic pathways, and risk stratification models for acute surgical conditions;
• Postoperative care, complications management, and quality improvement metrics in emergency surgical settings.
