Nephrotic Syndrome in Children: Understanding Pathogenesis and Novel Therapies
This special issue belongs to the section “Pediatric Nephrology & Urology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Nephrotic syndrome in children is characterized by heavy proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia and edema. Minimal change disease is the most frequent cause of nephrotic syndrome in children, but other glomerular disorders can also be involved. T cell-mediated processes, cytokines and genetic variants affecting proteins contribute to loss of barrier integrity. While corticosteroids remain the cornerstone in treating nephrotic syndrome, novel therapies aimed at podocyte-protective pathways, permeability factors and specific gene defects, offering the promise to act directly on podocytes and less toxic treatment options.
