Resilient and Sustainable Buildings: Advances in Architecture and Structural Systems

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing complexity of contemporary built environments requires closer integration of architectural design with advances in structural and civil engineering. The challenges posed by climate change, rapid urbanization, aging infrastructure, and the demand for higher living standards have intensified the need for resilient and sustainable building solutions. In this context, both architecture and civil engineering play fundamental roles in shaping buildings that are not only structurally safe and durable, but also environmentally responsible, energy-efficient, and adaptable to changing conditions.

This Special Issue, ‘Resilient and Sustainable Buildings: Advances in Architecture and Structural Systems’, seeks to bring together new concepts, research findings, and practical approaches that address the design, analysis, retrofitting, and management of buildings in response to these global challenges. By combining architectural perspectives with structural innovations, this Special Issue emphasizes strategies that enhance building performance while respecting cultural heritage, supporting sustainability goals, and incorporating modern digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digital twin solutions. We welcome contributions that explore cutting-edge advances, practical applications, and interdisciplinary insights that can guide the development of buildings for future generations.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sustainable building design, construction, and operation;
  • Advanced structural systems and innovative construction technologies;
  • Retrofitting and rehabilitation of existing and heritage buildings;
  • Architectural approaches to resilience and energy efficiency;
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twin technologies, and smart solutions for sustainable buildings;
  • Integration of renewable energy and resource-efficient strategies in architecture and engineering;
  • Materials and technologies for sustainable and resilient construction;
  • Case studies demonstrating the interaction between architecture and civil engineering.

This Special Issue aims to highlight innovative strategies that support the development of resilient, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
