Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Natural compounds derived from plants have long been recognized to possess bio/pharmacological activities. These compounds serve not only as traditional medicine or complementary and alternative medicine to treat various diseases, but they are also increasingly popular for self-medication and as part of a healthy daily diet. While natural compounds are often seen as having fewer side effects than synthetic substances, research has shown that many of these compounds can influence the function and expression of metabolizing enzymes and transporters. As a result, the potential interactions between natural compounds and over-the-counter or prescription medications have become a growing concern in recent years. Most previous studies have concentrated on how natural compounds directly affect protein function. However, many natural products act as modulators of regulatory proteins, such as nuclear receptors and kinases, which play a role in regulating metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters. These compounds can not only change the activity of these proteins but also influence their expression levels, localization, and/or conformation. Information on this type of regulation is limited and should be explored more thoroughly to provide a comprehensive understanding of natural product-drug interactions and their potential clinical implications.
