Challenges in Process Analytical Technologies for Mammalian Cell Cultures
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Among the challenges raised by the recent Industry 4.0 revolution, mathematical modelling plays a key role in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems used in industrial processes. In the specific context of biopharmaceuticals, where Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) are nowadays recommended for manufacturing, bioprocess yield and repeatability improvements are conditioned by the availability of dynamic models.
Mammalian cell cultures are the source of most biopharmaceutical therapeutics (monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), vaccines, glycoproteins, viral vectors, etc.), and the application of mechanistic and data-driven model-based software solutions has proved to significantly improve process productivity. However, some problematics remain, related to the inherent uncertainty of biosystems. Optimization methods may therefore be model-based—with some robust tolerance to model uncertainties—or model-free, using a limited a priori knowledge of process operation and without considering a full dynamic system.
This Special Issue focuses on original concepts in PAT and process monitoring, ranging from the application of instrumentation based on hardware and software sensors to the use of data-driven or model-based approaches. The submitted papers should present numerical and experimental applications for mammalian/human cell culture processes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
