Dear Colleagues,
As the penetration of renewables increases, the cost reduction of energy storage systems (ESS) will become an objective of special socio-economical relevance in the coming years and decades. One of the most compelling electrical energy storage system technologies are batteries, as they are not site dependent, and they can be built in easily-transported modules, in contrast to pumped-hydro. Recently, intensive efforts have been made to improve the performance of batteries in terms of power, energy, and, especially, fast ion/electron properties. In this framework, in addition to the important role of the electrolyte and membrane, electrode materials present a key role in the performance of a battery, due to supporting the electron transfer process (in the case of redox flow batteries) and intercalation of ions (in the case of sodium or lithium ion batteries). The state-of-the-art contains a large variety of electrode materials, in 2D or 3D, which differ from each other in terms of porosity and electrical conductivity, parameters that define the performance of batteries. This Special Issue addresses the improvements and trends, as well as challenges, for overcoming the drawbacks of present battery technology, following these topics:

- Advanced 3D and 2D electrode configuration

Batteries is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
