Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue titled "Biomechanics and Bioengineering in Dental Sleep Medicine" aims to explore the intersection of engineering innovation and clinical practice in the management of sleep-related breathing disorders using dental approaches. As dental sleep medicine continues to evolve, there is an increasing need to deepen our understanding of the biomechanical principles underlying oral appliance therapy and to enhance device design, customization, and clinical effectiveness using advanced bioengineering techniques.
Recent advances in digital workflows are revolutionizing the field of dental sleep medicine, offering opportunities for precision and efficiency. From intraoral scanning and 3D imaging to the computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) of oral appliances, digital technologies enable highly customized treatment solutions tailored to individual patient anatomy and functional requirements. Furthermore, digital tools facilitate the integration of biomechanical modeling, virtual simulations, and data-driven treatment planning, supporting clinicians in predicting therapeutic outcomes and optimizing appliance design.
This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews that investigate topics such as the mechanics of mandibular advancement devices, the computational modeling of craniofacial structures, material science applications, sensor integration, and personalized treatment planning. Contributions that bridge the gap between engineering research and clinical outcomes are particularly encouraged. By bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to highlight innovation in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of sleep-disordered breathing from a dental point of view.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
