Innovative and Advanced Urban Air Quality Research and Applications
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue invites high-quality, in-depth feature papers that advance the scientific understanding and practical management of near-surface air quality in urban and built environments. Contributions should present innovative methodologies, integrated analyses, or impactful applications related to air quality monitoring, modeling, exposure assessment, and mitigation at local to regional scales.
We particularly welcome feature papers addressing the following themes:
- Emerging Air Quality Monitoring and Sensor Technologies
Innovative monitoring methods, materials, and algorithms; low-cost and scalable sensor technologies; integration of Internet of Things (IoT) and micro-sensors for high-resolution spatiotemporal data; application of AI tools for data intergration and analysis; and robust validation, calibration, and data quality assurance frameworks. - Indoor Air Quality and Building Interactions
Human exposure to indoor air pollutants in residential, educational, and occupational environments; interactions between building design, ventilation systems, and occupant behavior; health, productivity, and well-being impacts; and effective mitigation and control strategies. - Personal Air Pollution Exposure Assessment and Health Effects
Advanced characterization of individual-level exposure patterns and determinants; short- and long-term health effects of regulated and emerging air pollutants; and integrative use of epidemiological, biomarker-based, and toxicological approaches to support exposure–response assessments. - Mitigation Strategies and Policy Interventions for Urban Air Quality Management
Evaluation of emission control technologies, regulatory and policy frameworks, and urban planning strategies; assessment of environmental and socioeconomic co-benefits of mitigation measures (e.g., energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable transportation); and insights into cross-sectoral collaboration and community engagement. - Air Pollution Dynamics and Source Apportionment
Advanced source identification and apportionment techniques; analysis of spatial and temporal variability of urban air pollutants; and application of receptor models, machine learning, and other data-driven approaches to inform effective air quality management.
This Special Issue aims to showcase representative feature papers that bridge fundamental research and real-world applications, supporting the development of healthier, more sustainable urban environments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Air is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
