Cover Story: This study compared the cleaning efficacy of LM Sharp Diamond™ curettes with that of conventional stainless-steel Gracey curettes in removing simulated root surface deposits. Using a standardized in vitro model, extracted teeth were coated with a plaque/calculus surrogate and instrumented under controlled conditions, after which the residual deposit was quantified by image analysis. The diamond-coated curettes achieved greater and more consistent cleaning, with significantly lower residual coverage than the traditional steel instruments. These findings suggest that diamond-coated manual curettes may improve the efficiency and consistency of non-surgical periodontal instrumentation, while potentially reducing the need for resharpening and supporting more reliable clinical performance over time.
