Cover Story: Suicide rates among children and adolescents have risen in recent years, with the sharpest rise among racially and ethnically minoritized youth. Primary care may be a critical venue for early intervention for youth whose symptoms might otherwise go undetected. This study examined the association between aggression and suicidality in 136 pediatric primary care patients (ages 6–17). Findings revealed an association between aggressive behavior and suicidality that can likely be explained by depressive symptoms. Aggressive behavior may represent a manifestation of internal distress rather than an independent risk factor. These results underscore the value of mental health screening in pediatric primary care and suggest that addressing both depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior could enhance suicide prevention efforts among youth. View this paper
