Cover Story: Menopause is accompanied by substantial changes in endogenous sex hormones, yet their associations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk remain incompletely understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesises evidence from 16 studies (18 articles) involving 16,180 postmenopausal women. Higher SHBG showed the most consistent inverse association with incidences of T2D, whereas higher oestradiol was associated with an increased risk of it. Evidence for FSH was suggestive but limited, while findings for testosterone were less consistent. These findings provide a comprehensive synthesis of the current evidence and highlight priorities for future prospective studies investigating endogenous sex hormones and T2D risk after menopause.
