Cover Story: The Internet of things (IoT) is a fast-growing field that has found applications in fields such as smart agriculture and industrial processing using low-powered wireless sensor networks. These smart sensors must often transmit data over limited-bandwidth channels, which can easily become overwhelmed. Furthermore, different sensors can have vastly different quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this work, we seek to use age of information (AoI) as a metric to quantify the QoS for two use cases, namely for real-time feedback control and image classification. Using AoI, an architecture was developed which used lossy data compression, and queue strategies were developed to improve data rates of low-powered wireless sensor networks.
