Cover Story: Red Amaranth, a persistent azo dye, poses a serious challenge for wastewater treatment. This work demonstrates how cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs), with a cubic fluorite structure, mesoporosity, and a 3.2 eV band gap, harness UV-A irradiation to generate reactive oxygen species that break down the dye. Under optimized conditions (20 mg L−1 Red Amaranth and 1.0 g L−1 catalyst), CeO2 achieved 90% degradation within 180 min and reduced chemical oxygen demand by approximately 85%, demonstrating substantial mineralization beyond simple discoloration. The findings highlight CeO2 nanoparticles as an efficient photocatalyst for treating dye-contaminated water. View this paper
