Cover Story: Tyre/road interactions act as the main noise source from vehicles running at speeds of over 30 km/h. Various methods have been developed to assess this noise, including CPX (Close-Proximity), CB (Coast-By), SPB (Statistical Pass-By), and CPB (Controlled Pass-By) tests. Since the instigation of EU Regulation (EC) 1222/2009, only the CB method, defined in Reg. (EC) 117/2007, is used for type approval in Europe. All these track tests have limitations, such as variability, repeatability issues, and environmental influences. To address these, the Alternative Drum (A-DR) and the improved A-CPX-DR methods were developed. Testing shows that A-CPX-DR offers accuracy and consistency, suggesting it as a cost-effective alternative for tyre noise approval in the EU. View this paper
