September 2025 - 54 articles

Cover Story: This article examines the history and cultural significance of cochineal reds in Iberia and France, tracing their transformation from raw material into a prized natural dye for textiles. Through documentary, material, and artistic evidence, it explores how scarlet shaped textile production, and how tin mordants influence its chromatic properties. Beyond its aesthetic value, the study situates cochineal within broader traditions of dyeing, offering new insights and helping to bridge gaps in the historical record of textile practices in Portugal. View this paper
