Cover Story: Modern embedded systems, in a quest to tackle the existing and more demanding requirements, employ heterogeneous processing power such as CPU-GPU platforms. However, besides the increased performance that comes with the new platforms, several challenges are introduced such as an increased complexity of the software-to-hardware allocation. Component-based development is an engineering paradigm that facilitates the software development of embedded systems. In this work, we address the component-to-hardware allocation for CPU-GPU embedded systems. We decrease the allocation complexity of such systems by introducing a 2-layer component-based architecture. The detailed (low-level) system information is abstracted at a high-level layer by compacting connected components (and their properties) into single units that behave as regular components.
