Cover Story: Comparative studies are often conducted in road safety research. They can be used to study the effect of certain infrastructure features on the frequency of road crashes. However, many studies only involve datasets with a comparatively small number of samples. Current machine learning methods enable the acquisition of Big Data and the extraction of larger samples. The authors conducted a replication study on the traffic safety of German roundabouts. It expands on the results of a previous study and replicates some of its findings. This was possible especially by using roughly a factor of 10 more roundabouts in the analysis, with considerably less manual intervention. Furthermore, this study could also draw some additional conclusions regarding the safety of bicyclists. View this paper
