Cover Story: Ubiquitous digital cameras, pervasive social media, easy access to the Internet, and new storage technologies are some of the factors that have led to an explosion in the daily production of digital visual data. This places a great demand on systems that enable efficient and effective management and retrieval of visual archives. This paper presents a content-based video retrieval system, called VISIONE, which provides various search functionalities to allow users to quickly fulfil a particular need for information on large video collections. VISIONE exploits artificial intelligence techniques to automatically analyze visual data and encodes the extracted information into a specifically designed textual representation that enables the use of mature and scalable full-text search technologies for indexing and searching video content.
