Cover Story: In the course of a project on culturable Ascomycota diversity from freshwater sediments, 63 strains belonging to the order Onygenales were isolated. These well-known ascomycetes, able to infect both humans and animals, are commonly found in terrestrial habitats, colonizing keratin-rich soils or dung. However, little is known about their diversity in aquatic environments. Combining morphological and sequence analyses of the ITS and LSU regions of the nrDNA, 14 known onygenalean species were identified, and several novel taxa, including the new family Neoarthropsidaceae, were delineated. Our findings indicate that freshwater sediments may serve as a reservoir for intriguing Onygenales, which warrant further investigation to address gaps in their phylogenetic relationships.
