Cover Story: Sporulation in Ashbya gossypii is regulated by a set of conserved regulators that drive the expression of downstream sporulation genes. These regulators include the IME1, IME2, NDT80, KAR4, STE12, and TEC1 genes. Sporulation is set into gear by environmental stimuli. Most important are nutritional cues, which are translated into cellular cAMP-levels that direct either growth when high or sporulation when low. Mutational analyses combined with RNAseq transcriptomics were used to elucidate the role of key sporulation regulators. This identified the Tpk2 catalytic subunit of protein kinase A as a gatekeeper of developmental decisions for both sporulation and breaking the dormancy of spores to initiate germination. This makes Ashbya an excellent fungal model to elucidate these processes. View this paper
