Cover Story: Mycoviruses are viruses that infect fungi and are found in the agriculturally and medically important genus, Aspergillus. Mycovirus infection in Aspergilli engenders a myriad of altered host phenotypes, from reduced stress tolerance (coupled with hypovirulence) to enhanced sensitivity to intermicrobial competition and specific antifungal treatments. Our review examines the nuanced world of these mycoviruses, from the genomic characterisation of viruses isolated from Aspergilli to date (including, in particular, viruses with linear single-stranded RNA genomes) to the potential mechanisms behind virus-mediated host phenotypes, such as how viruses may be triggers, targets or suppressors of RNA silencing. Additionally, the potential application of hypovirulence-inducing mycoviruses as therapeutics for invasive aspergillosis infections is discussed. View this paper
