Cover Story: Thanks to the progress of pediatric cardiovascular surgery and cardiac interventional catheterization, survival for patients with CHD has dramatically increased over the last several decades. With the rise in life expectancy, there is a need to understand the burden of long-term clinical outcomes, including noncardiac morbidities. There is significant evidence for an increased prevalence of cancer in patients with CHD compared to the general population. Shared genetic anomalies and cumulative medical radiation exposure from repeated procedures may be contributing factors. This review will summarize the state of the art and provide the basis for additional research to generate the evidence needed to optimize the treatment in CHD patients and develop recommendations for surveillance and screening cancer in this vulnerable population. View this paper
