Patients suffering from severe psychiatric disorders have a greatly reduced life expectancy due to psychiatric illness itself, poor lifestyle and complications related to the metabolic side effects of psychotropic treatments. Because of the current knowledge on the effect of sport on physical health, we consider that it is essential to improve the physical condition of patients and to limit these complications. In addition, studies of patients with mental disorders have shown positive effects of regular physical activity on anxiety, depressive and schizophrenia symptoms. As shown by the various studies selected, the establishment of a programme of physical activities, including yoga, aerobic exercises or muscle building, adapted from 4 to 24 weeks in psychiatric care can improve the physical and mental state in comparison with a control group, by practicing. Indeed, there is an improvement in VO₂max of 2.2 ml/ min/kg, which represents a 90.5% improvement over the control groups, a decrease in BMI and in PANSS score. However, the comparison of these different studies does not allow the minimum conditions required to obtain significant results tob e determined. These findings suggest future projects and follow up research in this field. Full article

In December 2006, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Twelve years later, it has already been ratified by 177 countries. The purpose of this convention is to eliminate discrimination against people with disabilities. The CRPD is a human rights convention aimed at promoting social inclusion, full access to human rights, fundamental freedoms and promotion of dignity for people with disabilities. According to Article 1 of the Convention, disabilities contain long-term physical, mental, intellectual and or sensory disabilities. These may pose obstacles to the full and effective participation of the persons concerned in society on an equal basis with others. In light of this first article, it is expected that medicine will help remove some of these barriers particularly by helping people express their needs, priorities, personal values and preferences regarding decisions related to their care or broader aspects of their lives. The CRPD is interested in the social inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of life. This review article will focus more specifically on the position of the CRPD regarding coercive measures. This challenge is particularly important in psychiatry. Full article

From his early youth Hermann Rorschach was attracted to the natural sciences. He also had an enduring interest in psychoanalysis. This article examines how these different interests manifested themselves in his work and the place this work found in the scientific circles of his time. The focus is on his dissertation on reflex hallucinations published in 1912, his «Psychodiagnostik» published in 1921, and his lecture «Zur Auswertung des Formdeutversuchs für die Psychoanalyse», the text of which was published posthumously in 1923. Published and unpublished letters offer additional insights and, taken together, these texts demonstrate that Rorschach considered natural science and psychoanalysis to be complementary approaches to understanding the human psyche. The origin and development of Rorschach's experiments and his career itself reflect scientific concepts, opinions and their backgrounds at the turn of the 20th century. Full article

Impact of existential, spiritual and religious patient characteristics on the quality of the therapeutic relationship The quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of treatment outcome. However, the mediating factors have been investigated variously. This study assessed the impact of the patient characteristics «existential competence», «spirituality» and «religiousness » on the quality of the therapeutic relationship, from the perspective of both the patient and the therapist. Discharge data of patients (n = 579) from the Clinic SGM Langenthal were retrospectively evaluated. The results showed that from the patient’s perspective, existential and spiritual characteristics do have an impact on the quality of the therapeutic relationship. From the therapists’ perspective, however, patient characteristics do not significantly influence the quality of the therapeutic relationship. Full article
