Cover Story: Modeling is a crucial tool in the biomanufacturing industry, namely in fermentation processes. Hybrid modeling is a growing field that combines mechanistic and data-driven models for greater accuracy and ease in extrapolating results. This work examines the characteristics and structure of such hybrid models, highlighting their versatility and usefulness in various process development stages, including real-time monitoring and optimization. Perspectives are presented on the potential of hybrid modeling by predicting performance across different process scales. This could lead to more efficient and reliable biomanufacturing processes that require fewer experimental development resources. View this paper
