Cover Story: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by interaction differences, entailing specificities with visual attention skills. While interacting with humans is challenging for youths with ASD, interaction with animals appears to be different. Notably, their visual attention toward animals may be different, which may have numerous benefits. We propose a scoping review on research conducted on visual attention towards animals in youths with ASD, following PRISMA guidelines. Using strict inclusion criteria, 21 studies were identified in international peer-reviewed journals. Taken together, the results highlighted that the visual attention toward animals of youths with ASD seems to be unaltered, at least on 2D pictures (they look at their eyes just as their neurotypical peers do). The next step for future studies would be to investigate if such results extend to real-life conditions. View this paper
