Cover Story: Jet stream winds over North America alternate between a wavy pattern (meridional flow, purple line) and a more west–east flow (zonal) direction. The wavy pattern (teleconnections) is associated with heat waves, California drought, and eastern United States cold-air winter storms. Rather than the persistence of trend of an extensive single weather pattern, different patterns are characterized by within-season and year-to-year temporal variability and short durations, with several events occurring within the winter season.
