Cover Story: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of leukemia in adults, yet survival rates remain low. Additionally, patients with AML often experience relapse and develop resistance to chemotherapy, underscoring the urgent need for new therapeutic strategies. Venetoclax, a BH3 mimetic, was recently approved for AML treatment in combination with azacitidine or cytarabine. However, these regimens still leave room for improvement. To enhance venetoclax’s therapeutic efficacy, researchers are exploring combination drug partners. Valproic acid, a long-established medication primarily used to treat epilepsy, has been found to be a promising candidate. Valproic acid can enhance the anti-AML activity of venetoclax. This approach exemplifies how drug combinations can unlock the previously untapped potential of existing medications. View this paper
