Cover Story: Within the Helmholtz Alliance for Robotic Exploration of Extreme Environments (ROBEX) small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are developed to support an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle during explorations below the Arctic marginal ice zone.
While a variety of consumer grade and professional solutions for autonomous UAV exists, the Arctic environment is still a challenge for small autonomous UAVs. One critical aspect is a reliable heading estimation despite the weak horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field in high latitudes. Using two or more Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, carrier phase-based observations can be utilized to estimate the UAVs orientation. View this paper
