Cover Story: The bioeconomy can be integral the transformation of the current economic system into one with reduced environmental and social impacts from material consumption. This work describes a bio-based, multi-layer panel based on residual coniferous bark. To ensure that this contributes to environmental protection while remaining competitive and meeting the high social standards, the development of the panel is accompanied by a sustainability assessment (comparative LCA and LCC to conventional benchmark panels and a qualitative S-LCA). The panel is only marginally weaker economically, and shows heterogeneous results in the environmental dimension (with benefits for categories such as climate change, acidification, and ozone formation, and detriments for categories such as eutrophication).View this paper
