Cover Story: The preservation of prehistoric cave paintings in the Magura cave (Bulgaria) is a very challenging task. The paintings are made of fossilized bat guano applied over a porous stone and are subject to particular environmental conditions which lead to severe deterioration. For painting preservation, an innovative treatment was investigated, which is aimed at improving the cohesion of the paintings and the underlying stone by forming the same mineral that constitutes human teeth and bones. The innovative treatment proved to be more effective in improving cohesion than commercial alternatives. Moreover, the treatment has the advantage of leaving the appearance of the samples on which it was tested and their ability to exchange water and water vapor with the environment basically unaltered.
