Cover Story: Vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes a first-order metal-insulator phase transition (MIT) from a low-temperature monoclinic insulating phase to a high-temperature rutile metallic phase. The phase transition of VO2 is accompanied by huge changes in conductance and optical transmittance. Driven by the rapid development of material fabrication technology, various VO2 nanostructures, e.g., thin films and low-dimensional structures (LDSs) of nanowires (NWs), nanodots (NDs), nanoparticles (NPs), nanorods (NRs), nanosheets (NSs), etc. have been successfully fabricated. The excellent MIT performances and rapid development in VO2 preparation and performance modulation technologies have greatly promoted the application of VO2 in electric and optical devices, sensors, actuators, etc. View this paper.
