Conscious Food Systems: Supporting Farmers’ Well-Being and Psychological Resilience

Abstract

Amid escalating ecological degradation, social fragmentation, and rising mental health challenges—especially in rural and agricultural communities—there is an urgent need to reimagine systems that support both planetary and human flourishing. This viewpoint examines an emerging paradigm in agriculture that emphasizes the role of farmers’ inner development in fostering practices that enhance ecological health, community well-being, and a resilient food system. A key goal is to draw more academic attention to growing community calls for more holistic, relational, and spiritually grounded approaches to food systems as an important focus for ongoing research. Drawing on diverse case studies from Japan, India, and Europe, we examine how small-scale and natural farming initiatives are integrating inner development, universal human values, and ecological consciousness. These case studies were developed and/or refined through a program led by the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA), an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that seeks to integrate inner transformation with sustainable food systems change. The initiatives are intended as illustrative examples of how agriculture can transcend its conventional, anthropocentric role as a food production system to become a site for cultivating deeper self-awareness, spiritual connection, and regenerative relationships with nature. Participants in these cases reported significant shifts in mindset—from materialistic and extractive worldviews to more relational and value-driven orientations rooted in care, cooperation, and sustainability. Core practices such as mindfulness, experiential learning, and spiritual ecology helped reframe farming as a holistic process that nurtures both land and life. These exploratory case studies suggest that when farmers are supported in aligning with inner values and natural systems, they become empowered as agents of systemic change. By linking personal growth with planetary stewardship, these models offer pathways toward more integrated, life-affirming approaches to agriculture and future academic research.

1. Introduction

Farming is not only the foundation of global food systems but also an intimate, often spiritually and emotionally rewarding relationship between humans, nature, and the land. Farmers operate at the frontlines of multiple converging challenges—climate instability [1,2], market pressures [3], ecological degradation [4], and social isolation [5]—while carrying the enduring responsibility of working in harmony with nature. In this precarious terrain, the psychological resilience and overall well-being of farmers are critical [6], not only for the individuals themselves but for the sustainability of our agricultural systems and the broader health of our ecosystems of which societies are a part [7]. This viewpoint is intended to draw greater academic attention to growing movements toward more holistic, integrated, relational approaches to farming that connect community and ecological well-being, as they represent an important direction for ongoing research.
Historically, agricultural policy and innovation have emphasized productivity, mechanization, and efficiency, often sidelining the consciousness and culture, and inner lives and emotional experiences of farmers [8,9,10,11,12]. Yet, as the intersecting crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and social fragmentation deepen, there is growing recognition that a transition toward sustainable and regenerative agriculture must also be accompanied by attention to their inner experiences [13,14], as well as their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being [12,15,16]. This includes cultivating new ways of thinking and mental models, such as systems thinking and holistic perspectives, which enable farmers to adopt and sustain regenerative practices. The health of soil and the health of “the soul” can be recognized as interconnected, and, drawing on Gosnell’s work [17], cultivating new ways of thinking—such as systems thinking and holistic perspectives—can help align farmers’ inner development with regenerative practices [18]. While fostering the psychological resilience of farmers is crucial, it is not sufficient on its own. Ideally, it must be accompanied by shifts in systems thinking, which serve as another prerequisite for regenerative practices that yield tangible ecological and planetary health benefits [19,20]. Such shifts can also be nurtured through grassroots changes in mindset and worldview.
Emerging frameworks in sustainable agriculture—ranging from agroecology to regenerative and organic farming—have increasingly acknowledged the role of local knowledge systems, relationality, and ecological consciousness [21,22,23]. However, few interventions explicitly address the emotional dimensions of agricultural life: the stress, trauma, hope, and meaning-making processes that shape how farmers respond to changing conditions. Traditions such as permaculture and agroecology already contain personal and social dimensions, but these are often overshadowed by technical emphases.
The Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA) has advanced this line of inquiry by exploring how inner development can strengthen farmers’ well-being and resilience, and how it can also support transitions to agroecology. This raises key questions: How can inner development foster farmers’ psychological resilience and capacity to cope with structural challenges? How do farming practices shape farmers’ well-being, and in turn, how can inner capacities enable shifts toward agroecology? What are the key inner capacities needed for that? These questions call for an expanded understanding of sustainability—one that includes not only external environmental and economic conditions, but also internal landscapes of identity, grit, mindsets, emotional resilience, purpose, and community.
For illustrative purposes, we present a series of case studies as examples of community initiatives centered on integrative approaches to food and fiber production that both support—and are made possible by—farmers’ psychological resilience and well-being as part of a holistic vision for sustainable agriculture. Rather than providing definitive evidence, these examples are intended to inform community-led directions for future academic research. Their innovative contribution lies in foregrounding these inner dimensions, drawing on insights from CoFSA dialogues with farmers, including the report Listening to Farmers: How Can We Recognize and Support Farmers’ Well-being? [24] and interviews on the Inner Dimension of Agroecology [25]. Taken together, they explore how meditative and contemplative practices, embodied approaches to land stewardship, and frameworks grounded in universal human values support inner development and contribute to ecological regeneration. In doing so, we position farmer well-being not as a secondary concern, but as a necessary foundation—alongside systems thinking and ecological literacy—for any viable transformation of food systems in the twenty-first century.

2. Recognizing the Mental and Emotional Health Burden of Contemporary Farming

The mental health crisis among farmers is well documented, yet still insufficiently addressed [26]. Studies from numerous countries report higher-than-average rates of depression, anxiety [27], and suicide among farmers [28], often linked to the volatility of agricultural markets, increasing debt, the physical demands of the work, and the psychological toll of witnessing land degradation or livestock loss [29,30]. Recent research further highlights the cumulative burden of chronic stress, loneliness, and low help-seeking behaviors—particularly among male farmers—as significant contributors to declining well-being [5]. Added to this is the emotional labor of upholding multigenerational family legacies, navigating social expectations, and coping with a rapidly changing climate that disrupts traditional farming rhythms [31,32]. These emotional demands are increasingly recognized as central, rather than peripheral, to farmers’ mental health and decision-making [33].
In industrialized contexts, the consolidation of farms, rural depopulation, and the loss of community structures have further exacerbated feelings of isolation and disempowerment [3,34]. The Green Revolution and the growing reliance on agrichemicals have also diminished farmers’ direct connection to ecological processes and reduced their sense of autonomy and efficacy [19]. Many farmers now depend on external consultants to advise on fertilizer use, and familiarity with local ecologies—such as knowing the names of grasses or the rhythms of soil health—has been eroded [19]. This loss of ecological intimacy has been associated with diminished meaning, agency, and identity among farmers, compounding psychological stress [18]. In the Global South, smallholder farmers face additional vulnerabilities, including limited access to financial and technical support, land tenure insecurity, and the impacts of colonial legacies and the Green Revolution that have eroded traditional knowledge and food sovereignty [35].
Too often, the response to these stressors has been framed in individualistic terms—encouraging farmers to develop personal coping strategies, access mental health services, or build resilience through self-care. While these approaches are important, they risk placing the burden of adaptation on individuals without addressing the structural, cultural, and ecological conditions that shape farmers’ experiences [26]. Recent interventions demonstrate that when mental health support is co-designed with farmers and embedded within agricultural contexts, meaningful improvements in well-being and psychological flexibility are possible [36].
This paper argues the need for a paradigm shift: one that attends not only to the symptoms of distress but to the deeper causes, and that fosters systemic healing across both inner and outer landscapes [16]. Such a shift aligns with emerging evidence that inner capacities—such as mindfulness, purpose, and relational awareness—are not only protective for farmer well-being, but also shape sustainable decision-making and engagement with land, water, and community [18,21,33,37]. Without such transformation at the level of meaning and motivation, externally driven reforms risk remaining fragile or short-lived [18].

3. A Holistic Framework: Inner and Outer Sustainability

In recent years, interdisciplinary efforts have begun to bridge the gap between sustainable agriculture and inner development. Frameworks such as the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) [38], which emphasize five interconnected dimensions—Being, Thinking, Relating, Collaborating, and Acting—and associated capacities such as presence, compassion, courage, and purpose [39], offer useful starting points for reimagining what it means to support farmers, not only as food producers but as whole human beings embedded in relationships with land, nature, community, and self. These dimensions provide a structured yet flexible framework for understanding how inner capacities shape farmers’ ability to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and change.
This perspective is strongly supported by recent empirical work by Bakker et al. [18], which provides one of the clearest demonstrations of how inner development underpins sustained agricultural transformation. Through an in-depth qualitative analysis of agroecological farmers in the Netherlands, Bakker and colleagues identify personal transformation—shifts in values, identity, motivation, and sense of purpose—as foundational to enduring change. Using a framework of “zones of friction and traction” across personal, practical, and political spheres, they show that neglecting the inner, personal sphere can undermine transitions in the outer, structural domains. These findings closely align with the IDG Being dimension (self-awareness, integrity, purpose) and Thinking dimension (sense-making, perspective-taking), underscoring that inner development is not peripheral but central to sustainable agricultural change.
This emphasis is echoed in systems-oriented sustainability scholarship, which identifies attitudes, values, and deep philosophical orientation as the highest leverage points for systemic change [21]. Importantly, such inner shifts not only initiate transformation but also help individuals and communities endure the inevitable challenges, uncertainties, and resistance encountered during periods of transition. In this sense, inner development functions both as a catalyst for change and as a stabilizing resource that sustains farmers through periods of disruption—an insight that directly complements empirical findings and the IDG framework.
Such integrative approaches recognize that true resilience is not simply about “bouncing back,” but about cultivating the emotional, spiritual, and cognitive capacities that enable creative and compassionate adaptation to complex challenges [40]. Growing empirical evidence supports this view, demonstrating that capacities such as mindfulness, emotional regulation, and psychological flexibility are associated with improved farmer well-being and more adaptive, sustainable decision-making [33,37]. These capacities map closely onto the IDG dimensions of Relating (empathy, connectedness), Collaborating (trust, dialogue, co-creation), and Acting (agency, courage, perseverance), highlighting how inner development supports both personal flourishing and collective transformation.
Central to this vision is the concept of relationality—an understanding of the self as fundamentally interconnected with the wider web of life. For many Indigenous, agrarian, and spiritual traditions, farming is not just an occupation but a sacred relationship [41,42]—a form of co-becoming with the Earth and its beings. The work of Bakker et al. [18] similarly highlights how relational commitments—to land, community, and future generations—motivate farmers to persist with agroecological practices despite economic and institutional pressures. Ocsai likewise emphasizes stewardship, regeneration, and the integration of “minds and hearts” as essential elements of ecologically conscious food systems, grounded in ethical commitment rather than instrumental logic alone [21]. Restoring this relational consciousness, we argue, is essential for both ecological regeneration and human healing and health [43], particularly in a time marked by disconnection and extraction.
While economic stability, access to markets, and material resources are critical determinants of farmers’ well-being, inner development should not be seen as a luxury reserved for affluent contexts. Rather, cultivating inner capacities across all five IDG dimensions—even under conditions of economic precarity—can strengthen farmers’ ability to cope with stress, navigate uncertainty, collaborate with others, and sustain commitment to regenerative practices [18,33,37]. In this way, inner development does not replace structural or technical interventions but complements them, enhancing both individual well-being and the long-term viability of transitions toward sustainable and regenerative agricultural systems.
While the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) provide a useful and intentionally secular framework for articulating core capacities relevant to sustainability transitions, the approach advanced here also recognizes that many of these capacities have long been cultivated within diverse spiritual, Indigenous, and cultural wisdom traditions. Practices emphasizing presence, relational awareness, ethical responsibility, care, and stewardship appear across agrarian, contemplative, and land-based traditions worldwide, albeit expressed through different cultural, historical, and cosmological lenses. We therefore situate the IDGs as an integrative reference point that overlaps strongly with diverse spiritual and cultural wisdom traditions, while acknowledging that they cannot fully capture their depth, contextual meaning, or lived expression.
Importantly, we do not propose a singular or universal model of inner development. Instead, we emphasize that inner capacities become most meaningful and effective when interpreted and enacted through locally grounded, community-led perspectives. The relevance of spiritual or cultural dimensions of inner development is therefore context-dependent, shaped by place, history, livelihood, and identity. In agrarian settings, this often involves reconnecting with locally embedded knowledge systems, ethical frameworks, and relational practices that resonate with farmers’ lived experience. Approached in this way, inner development complements the IDG framework by providing culturally situated pathways through which shared capacities can be cultivated in ways that are respectful, inclusive, and responsive to grassroots realities (also see Section 12 for limitations).

4. Seeding Perspectives and Practices Grounded in Connected Consciousness

The case studies that follow were drawn from a larger Case Study Collection program curated by the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA) [44], a multi-stakeholder network hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that explores how inner transformation can support sustainable food systems change. From this broader collection, we selected a subset of cases that explicitly foreground farmers’ well-being and psychological resilience, and that document initiatives and practices developed by CoFSA members to support these dimensions in holistic and culturally grounded ways. The selected case studies were chosen to illustrate three interrelated themes: (i) how inner development may support farmers’ well-being and psychological resilience; (ii) how inner development may enable or sustain transitions toward agroecological practices; and (iii) the types of inner capacities and relational skills implicated in these processes.
The first study (Case Study 1) explores the use of meditative practices, including mindfulness, breathwork, and contemplative land-based rituals, which have shown promise in reducing stress and enhancing clarity, focus, and emotional balance among farmers. These practices are not only tools for personal well-being but also vehicles for nurturing ecological awareness and ethical reflection, thereby supporting transitions to more sustainable and organic farming models.
The next example (Case Study 2) examines community-based efforts to empower farmers and their families through participatory education, collective decision-making, and peer support networks. These approaches highlight the importance of social connectedness and mutual care in fostering resilience, and they align with broader movements for food sovereignty and democratic control over agricultural systems.
Case Studies 3–5 explore embodied farming and holistic land stewardship—practices that integrate ecological design with somatic awareness, personal growth, and spiritual development—including the relationship between the “spirit of the farmer and the spirit of nature” (Case Study 5). Rooted in the understanding that how we cultivate land reflects how we cultivate self, these models blur the lines between farming, healing, and learning. These initiatives invite farmers to engage their bodies, hearts, and minds in co-creating sustainable futures.
Case Study 6 emphasizes the role of universal human values, such as compassion, humility, and a sense of shared purpose, as foundational to both inner resilience and collective flourishing. These values are not abstract ideals but lived practices that can guide ethical decision-making, enhance relationships, and inspire regenerative action across cultures and contexts.
Finally, we locate these efforts within the broader vision of planetary health, a framework that links human well-being with the health of natural systems of which we are a part. We argue that supporting farmers’ inner development is not a peripheral concern, but a vital strategy for advancing the deeper consciousness and relational ethics required for the long-term flourishing of life on Earth. In this sense, the ethos of regenerative and agroecological traditions—particularly the permaculture principles rooted in Indigenous worldviews that emphasize care for the Earth, care for people, and the sharing of resources—resonates strongly with the themes of this work [16]. Ultimately, the common theme of these case studies is to underscore the value of a cultural shift toward greater care—care for farmers, care for the land, and care for the inner worlds that shape how we relate to each other and the planet.

5. Case Study 1: Sustainable Yogic Agriculture and the Cultivation of Farming Family Well-Being

5.1. Context

As a first example, we explore the impact of meditative practices on supporting farmers’ well-being and facilitating the transition towards organic farming in India [45,46]. This approach was studied by Julia Wright and Janus Bojesen Jensen from the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience at Coventry University, UK, who examined how integrating meditative practices can improve farmer well-being while encouraging more sustainable agricultural methods [47]. The research was conducted within the broader context of rising farmer suicides and ongoing mental health challenges in India’s agricultural sector [48].
The initiative centers around the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, founded in 1937, which is grounded in a Vedic cosmological worldview. This worldview posits that all human beings are fundamentally pure souls temporarily inhabiting physical bodies. In alignment with this spiritual foundation, Sustainable Yogic Agriculture (SYA) emerged in response to reports from Indian farmers who observed enhanced crop vitality when they engaged in meditation practices in their fields [49].
Recognizing the potential of these practices, the Brahma Kumaris’ Rural Development Wing formally launched SYA in 2008. The initiative aims to improve farmers’ livelihoods and holistic well-being through a combination of meditative disciplines and organic farming techniques [50]. At the heart of SYA is the belief that “as the food, so the mind, and as the mind, so the body,” emphasizing the reciprocal relationship between mental states, physical health, and agricultural outcomes.
With formal permission from the Rural Development Wing, researchers at Coventry University conducted a case study of the SYA system to evaluate its benefits and explore its implications for sustainable agriculture and psychological resilience among farmers.

5.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

The SYA method comprises a combination of approaches and support:
Meditative Practices: SYA incorporates thought-based meditative practices with traditional organic farming principles, which exclude the use of non-organic fertilizers and biocides. Farmers are taught to practice open-eyed, Raja Yoga meditation daily, including between 4 and 5 am, either at home or in the field. This meditation helps farmers foster a connection to God, self, the Motherland, and cows, which are considered holy in India. The logic is that pure thoughts generate pure vibrations, creating a pure atmosphere that positively affects crop health and growth.
Field Practices: Farmers use affirmations during different phases of the cropping cycle and are encouraged to play music, sing spiritual songs, and use bells around oxen’s necks to create a harmonious and uplifting environment. Distinctive yellow and red Flags of Shiva, standing about 5 feet tall, are placed at intervals across the fields to remind farmers that the land is under divine care and to reflect sunlight and deter pests.
Training and Support: The first SYA field trials began in 2009, involving 400 smallholder farmers in central and northern India. Since then, training has expanded to hundreds of villages annually across various regions, supported by scientists from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology and Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada University of Agriculture and Technology.

5.3. Outcomes and Impact

Farmers practicing SYA have reported a range of personal and social benefits summarized in Table 1, which includes data from several sources described in a previous publication [47]. These included perceived improvements in family relationships, a stronger connection to their livelihood, and an enhanced sense of well-being, purpose, and inner peace. Emotional improvements were also reported, including by the families of the farmers, such as reduced feelings of anger and frustration, alongside increased patience, forgiveness, and self-esteem. Additionally, participants reported a noticeable decline in addiction-related issues (e.g., smoking, alcohol, opium), fewer visits to the doctor, and a greater sense of inner strength.
On the agricultural side, farmers reported increased crop yields, improved nutritional quality, and enhanced plant resilience. More details on both quantitative and qualitative measures have been previously published in [47]. These findings, also summarized in Table 1, indicate production costs decreased, while the price per kilogram of produce sold rose. SYA also contributed to lower crop vulnerability to pests, quicker seed germination, and compatibility with other sustainable methods such as the System of Rice Intensification. The overall farm environment was perceived as more pleasant, joyful, and revitalizing, an effect noted even by visiting observers. Broader community-level changes included reports of cleaner villages, a more peaceful atmosphere, and greater political unity, particularly during election periods.

5.4. Key Learnings

Challenges and Adoption: As with other sustainable farming approaches, SYA encountered challenges to adoption. Farmers often faced labor shortages and found organic inputs more difficult to access than conventional agrochemicals. A three-year transition period was typically required to restore soil health and biodiversity. Addressing skepticism around farming without agrochemicals was crucial and was often achieved by highlighting the financial benefits of producing higher-quality crops and reducing input costs. The Rural Development Wing played a pivotal role in facilitating farmer-to-farmer networks, which provided essential peer support and knowledge-sharing to aid adoption.
Benefits and Psycho-Social Impact: The integration of Raja Yoga meditation with organic farming principles notably enhanced the psycho-social well-being of farmers. Meditation practices contributed not only to individual well-being but also to improved relationships within families and the broader community. The resulting increases in peace of mind and overall well-being are particularly valuable given the stressors faced by smallholder farmers in India and other regions. The positive outcomes observed at both local and regional levels over a relatively short period (12 years) suggest strong potential for the wider recognition and scaling of SYA and its associated meditative practices.
Taken together, the reported outcomes suggest that SYA supports all five dimensions of the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework in concrete and mutually reinforcing ways. At the level of being, farmers described enhanced inner peace, emotional regulation, purpose, and reduced addictive behaviors, indicating strengthened inner life and self-awareness. The dimension of thinking is reflected in a deeper connection to livelihood, long-term stewardship of land, and the adoption of practices that integrate ecological complexity, resilience, and systems-based agricultural approaches. Improvements in family relationships, empathy, patience, forgiveness, and community harmony align strongly with relating, while increased trust, cooperation, and political unity—particularly during periods of social stress—demonstrate capacities associated with collaborating. Finally, acting is evident in the translation of these inner and relational shifts into sustained behavioral change, including improved farming practices, increased yields and nutritional quality, reduced production costs, and the successful integration of SYA with other sustainable agricultural methods. Together, these outcomes illustrate how inner development can catalyze personal well-being, social cohesion, and regenerative sustainability practices.

6. Case Study 2: The Atmiyata Programme: A Community-Led Intervention for Farmers’ Mental Health Support

6.1. Context

This case study highlights how community empowerment can bridge mental health gaps in low-resource settings such as rural India. Led by the Atmiyata Programme, it illustrates the impact of a community-driven, low-cost intervention that has not only expanded access to mental health support but also fostered resilience and empathy across more than 1890 villages.
The programme works closely with both formal and informal farmer groups in rural areas. Given the high prevalence of psychological distress among farmers—linked to climate variability, water insecurity, crop failures, and financial strain from loans and debts—engaging and training these communities has proven transformative. Involving farming populations and other informal rural groups in the intervention has fostered grassroots leadership and broader community resilience.
Developed by the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy (CMHLP) in Pune, India, the Atmiyata Programme was launched in 2013 to address the significant unmet mental health needs in underserved rural areas. Mental health services in these regions are often scarce, and stigma and discrimination further discourage individuals from seeking help. In response, Atmiyata began in 41 villages and has since scaled to cover seven districts and five states by 2024.
Atmiyata strategically leverages the social capital of local communities by working in collaboration with state governments, existing local systems, community health workers, and other stakeholders. Its approach focuses on building sustainable, community-led mental health support systems that assist individuals with Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) in leading healthier, more productive lives. In doing so, the programme helps to break the interlinked cycle of poverty and mental ill-health, demonstrating the potential for scalable, empathetic, and contextually grounded mental health care solutions.

6.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

The Atmiyata programme aims to achieve the following:
  • Reduce the treatment and psychosocial care gap for individuals with common and severe mental disorders.
  • Improve mental health outcomes for people experiencing common mental disorders (CMDs).
  • Enhance the overall quality of life for individuals living with mental health challenges.
  • Increase access to social welfare schemes for those affected by mental health issues.
In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized Atmiyata as one of 25 exemplary practices for delivering community-based mental health services aligned with rights-based and recovery-oriented approaches for marginalized and vulnerable populations. Designed to complement the public mental health system, Atmiyata offers a scalable and culturally appropriate model for addressing the mental health care gap in rural and underserved settings.
Atmiyata employs several interconnected approaches grounded in psychological insight, transformative communication, and community empowerment:
Psychological and Cognitive-Behavioral Practices: Volunteers are trained, mentored, and supervised to carry out four key activities: (i) identify individuals experiencing psychological distress or common mental health conditions and provide 4–6 sessions of evidence-based counseling; (ii) raise awareness through “narrowcasting” films (i.e., directed to small groups of two or three village community members using Atmiyata-provided smartphone) on the social determinants of mental health (Figure 1); (iii) refer individuals with severe mental health conditions to public mental health services as needed; and (iv) facilitate access to social care benefits.
Transformative Spaces and Communication Practices: Training modules incorporate animations, role plays, and open dialogue to build volunteers’ capacity to create safe and transformative spaces within their communities. By employing active listening, problem-solving techniques, behavioral activation, and non-verbal communication strategies, volunteers deliver interventions that are culturally acceptable, empathetic, and effective.
Transformative Education and Leadership Practices: Atmiyata’s capacity-building efforts empower volunteers to become mental health champions within their communities. These sessions promote leadership, advocacy, and sustained engagement in mental health promotion and care, fostering long-term community resilience and social cohesion.

6.3. Outcomes and Impact

By design, Atmiyata fosters the development of inner capacities by empowering communities to identify and address their own mental health and social care needs. The programme supports inner transformation, particularly among its volunteers, who gain skills to recognize mental health stressors, challenge common myths, and cultivate empathy and compassion. Many volunteers report improvements in their own mental well-being and social standing, feeling empowered to assist others and strengthen community ties.
A stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled implementation trial [51] demonstrated that Atmiyata is effective in reducing reported symptoms of common mental disorders (CMDs), such as depression and anxiety, and improving quality of life within a three-month period. Volunteers accurately identified individuals with CMDs in 58% of cases. The programme has normalized conversations around mental health in rural areas, increased help-seeking behaviors, and improved public understanding of the social determinants of mental well-being.
Volunteers have reported enhanced confidence in addressing mental health issues, initiating meaningful dialogue, and managing interpersonal conflicts. Community engagement has been strong, with many participants completing counseling sessions and successfully accessing social entitlements. Through Atmiyata, mental health conditions—once hidden or stigmatized—have become more visible and manageable [51].
Atmiyata has also influenced the broader health system at the district level. By increasing the visibility of mental health needs and reducing stigma around severe conditions, the programme has stimulated demand for mental health services. A strong emphasis is placed on equitable participation: a significant proportion of volunteers come from marginalized caste groups, and gender parity is prioritized within the volunteer teams to ensure widespread accessibility and inclusion.

6.4. Learnings

One of the primary challenges during the intervention’s implementation was stigma and resistance. Initially framed around mental illness, the intervention encountered pushback from community members. To improve acceptance, the approach was reframed to focus on addressing everyday social and economic challenges—an adjustment that proved more effective in gaining community support.
Ensuring equitable reach was another key challenge. Expanding the intervention’s impact required demographic representation among volunteers, which enhanced both its reach and effectiveness. Training additional supporters, known as Mitras, was also essential for overcoming social barriers and increasing the program’s accessibility and acceptance within diverse communities.
Structural barriers further complicated implementation. Broader issues such as domestic violence and unemployment had to be addressed to more effectively meet community needs. These structural concerns were closely tied to individuals’ well-being, underscoring the importance of a holistic approach to mental health support.
Strong community engagement played a critical role in the intervention’s success and scalability. Co-designing the program with community members and leveraging existing social capital ensured cultural sensitivity and alignment with local values and priorities, paving the way for widespread acceptance and expansion. Atmiyata is now focusing on innovating the intervention further by upskilling the champions to add more skills to address gender-based violence.
Collaboration with existing health systems emerged as a vital factor for sustainability. Integrating the program into established health infrastructure not only built trust but also supported long-term maintenance of the intervention. This alignment reinforces the creation of a sustainable model for community-based mental health care.
The intervention’s flexible design allows it to be integrated into various community-based initiatives and adapted for urban settings, offering a scalable solution for broader mental health support. Its adaptability makes it a versatile tool in the pursuit of comprehensive and inclusive mental health care.
Overall, Atmiyata’s success lies in its low-cost, evidence-based model that effectively harnesses community resources. Its expansion and demonstrated outcomes highlight its potential for broader replication and integration into public health systems, offering a promising pathway to improve mental health care access and impact in low- and middle-income contexts.
In summary, the Atmiyata programme demonstrates another example of how community-based mental health interventions can strengthen all five dimensions of the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework. The dimension of being is reflected in reported improvements in volunteers’ self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and personal well-being, alongside reductions in depression and anxiety among community members. Thinking capacities are evident in volunteers’ ability to recognize mental health stressors, challenge prevailing myths, and understand the social and structural determinants of mental well-being. Relating is strengthened through the normalization of conversations around mental health, reduced stigma, improved interpersonal dialogue, and enhanced trust within families and communities. The programme also fosters collaborating by mobilizing local social capital, prioritizing equitable participation across caste and gender, co-designing solutions with communities, and integrating with existing health systems. Finally, acting is expressed through measurable behavioral and systems-level change, including increased help-seeking, successful access to social entitlements, improved quality of life, and the scalable integration of Atmiyata into district-level public health infrastructure. Together, these outcomes highlight the role of inner and relational development in enabling effective, inclusive, and sustainable mental health care.

7. Case Study 3: Inner and Outer Transformation Through an Embodied Permaculture Project

In a world where the rhythm of nature often feels distant, the Embodied Permaculture Project [52] invites reconnection—deeply and authentically—with the environment. More than working with nature, it calls us to live as part of it. This innovative initiative, led by Alef Trust’s Conscious Community Initiative in collaboration with Earthbound facilitators and the Permaculture Association Britain, brought together 20 passionate permaculture practitioners from across Europe for an 18-month journey of transformation.
Blending inner consciousness practices with sustainable ecological design, the project supports participants in exploring new ways of being—ways that harmonize with the natural world and foster profound shifts in both personal and community life.

7.1. Context

The Embodied Permaculture Project is part of Alef Trust’s Conscious Community Initiative and is being implemented by Earthbound facilitators Dan and Johanna McTiernan, in partnership with the Permaculture Association of Britain. The initiative explores the intersection of inner integrative practices and social change to support both individual and systemic transformation.
This live, facilitated online program engages 20 permaculture practitioners, tutors, and diploma students from across the UK and Europe. The participatory phase runs for 18 months, from June 2023 to November 2024, with data analysis and reporting concluding by May 2025.
Permaculture is a design methodology following the patterns and principles of nature; it advocates working with nature rather than against it. The Embodied Permaculture Project aims to deepen this principle by exploring how permaculture can be practiced as an experience of being in nature, working. This involves discovering new ways of living and being attuned to our ecosystems through embodied presencing and relational practices, focusing on listening, attuning, and intuiting within action learning cycles. The project examines the impact of these practices on permaculture work, design, and community engagement from a felt sense of interbeing.

7.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

The project is grounded in the premise that the belief in our separation from each other and from nature underlies many of today’s crises. Transformative inner experiences—where participants feel more connected to themselves, others, and the natural world—are seen as key leverage points for more harmonious ways of living. The project follows a four-stage process: Grounding, Attuning, Opening, and Integration.
Grounding: This initial phase centers on regulating the nervous system through practices such as breathwork and embodied meditation. These activities promote a sense of safety, presence, and relaxation, fostering a deeper connection with both the body and the natural world.
Attuning: Participants deepen their awareness of the body–mind through subtle interoception, supported by meditation, dyadic relational inquiry, and somatic coaching. This stage invites the gentle release of unhelpful patterns and attunement to deeper sources of inner guidance.
Opening: In this phase, participants engage with others through “social field” practices and apply them within their permaculture contexts. This work is reinforced through community action learning cycles that support shared growth and insight.
Integration: The final stage focuses on embedding these practices into everyday life, normalizing them in social contexts, and embodying the resulting transformation as enduring traits.
These approaches target deep leverage points for transformation and are delivered through live group Zoom sessions, one-to-one coaching, and recorded exercises for home practice.
Participants—invited through the Permaculture Association Britain—include practitioners, tutors, employees, and diploma students from the UK and Europe. Quantitative data is collected through scale-based questionnaires at the beginning and end of the project, exploring inner, outer, and relational experiences, including the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) questionnaire and the Nondual Embodiment Thematic Inventory (NETI) before and at the end of the program. Qualitative data is gathered through one-to-one interviews, group sessions, and participant journaling shared on a private forum.

7.3. Outcomes and Impact

In this preliminary study of 20 participants, analysis of the MAIA questionnaire shows consistent improvements across all domains of interoceptive awareness between the start and end of the programme. Participants reported a stronger ability to notice bodily sensations, track changes in breath and physical states, and recognize emotional cues as they arise in the body. The most pronounced gains were seen in areas related to emotional awareness through the body (29.3% average increase) and self-regulation via bodily cues (29.8% average increase), suggesting that participants were not only more aware of internal signals but also better able to respond to them in supportive and adaptive ways. Improvements in trusting and feeling at home in the body (26.9% increase) further indicate a shift toward greater embodied safety and stability.
These findings closely complement the NETI, which showed clear improvements in all thematic areas. The strongest shifts were seen in inner contentment (34.9% average positive change), acceptance of experience (33.4% increase), and reduced fear or defensiveness (27.6% increase), suggesting a move away from stress-driven inner states toward greater ease and stability. Notably, gains were not limited to emotional regulation alone. Participants also reported meaningful increases in presence, inner quiet, freedom, vitality, and relational openness, indicating a broad strengthening of embodied well-being rather than isolated changes. Taken together, the results point to a coherent pattern of inner capacity building that supports sustained, life-aligned work in regenerative and land-based contexts.
Other reported benefits include increased grounded awareness, trust in inner knowing, and greater patience and compassion. Participants also noted improved listening and attunement skills, a sense of empowerment to effect change, and enhanced abilities in conflict resolution. Many participants reported a stronger sense of agency, increased presence, and a clearer sense of purpose and energy. Group dynamics improved through deeper listening, attentiveness to others’ needs, and more generative problem-solving. Most participants began integrating embodiment practices into meetings, workshops, and other work contexts, with positive results.
Participants observed that inner and outer shifts positively influenced their permaculture work environments. They experienced more cohesive group interactions and a stronger sense of shared purpose in community projects. Enhanced listening, openness, and reduced anxiety contributed to improved team dynamics, while greater trust in “inner knowing” supported more emergent and adaptive design solutions.
Early signs of systemic change include the emergence of new collaborative capacities and relational skills. Participants felt more confident in fostering positive spaces during business meetings and in introducing practices such as group breathing exercises—contributing to better teamwork and a deeper alignment with shared purpose.

7.4. Learnings

Individual meetings with participants at the project’s outset helped establish initial trust. Early group sessions emphasized intention-setting without reference to titles or status, fostering a safe and deepening group dynamic. An initial heavy focus on teaching—intended to provide a shared conceptual framework and experiential understanding of embodied presence—met some resistance from more experienced participants. Adjusting the balance between educational content and relational engagement helped strengthen group cohesion and participation. Participant retention throughout the project has remained very high.
The facilitators’ deep familiarity with permaculture and ecological design has been essential. Dan and Johanna McTiernan, professionally active in permaculture since 2008, bring fluency in bridging inner and outer change work. The project weaves deeper contact experiences into permaculture language, making the transition between interior and exterior experience more accessible and meaningful for participants.
Plans are underway to develop a mass-participation online course focused on the well-being of farmers and food producers—expanding the reach from 20 participants to several hundred across the UK. While a short course can enhance well-being, sustained transformation requires long-term facilitation and peer-to-peer connection. The project is exploring ways to build live, online communities to support continued practice and foster deeper shifts in consciousness and embodied experience.
Distinct from the other case studies, this intervention highlights the role of embodied and interoceptive awareness as a primary mechanism for inner development within the IDG framework. Marked improvements in emotional awareness, self-regulation, and embodied safety (being) supported greater presence, adaptive sense-making, and trust in inner knowing (thinking), which in turn translated into improved listening, relational attunement, and conflict resolution in group and work settings (relating and collaborating). As with the other case studies, these inner and relational shifts enabled more purposeful, regenerative, and systems-oriented action (acting), here specifically applied to permaculture practice, community projects, and emergent design processes.

8. Case Study 4: Tiny Farms Academy: Bridging the Gap Between Self-Awareness and Sustainable Farming in Germany

8.1. Context

In an age where sustainable practices are essential for the future of our planet, Tiny Farms Academy stands out by blending organic farming with mindfulness and personal growth. This innovative NGO is not just focused on cultivating vegetables; it is about cultivating individuals who are deeply connected to the land and their own well-being.
Tiny Farms Academy is a forward-thinking NGO based in Berlin, Germany, with additional locations in Hamburg and plans for expansion to Zürich, Switzerland. The organization offers a nine-month learning program designed specifically for career changers interested in transitioning into organic vegetable farming. This comprehensive curriculum provides a holistic learning experience, integrating expertise from organic agriculture, mindfulness, and modern work practices. Through a hybrid learning format, participants have the chance to learn from a diverse group of experienced instructors and embark on a transformative educational journey.

8.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

The primary goal of Tiny Farms Academy is to reconnect individuals with organic vegetable production while fostering personal growth and community engagement. By offering a comprehensive curriculum that blends practical gardening skills (field work) with inner development (inner work), the project aims to empower participants to become changemakers in sustainable agriculture and beyond. Through hands-on learning experiences at the farm, online training, and a supportive community, the Academy strives to cultivate a new generation of conscious farmers and consumers who are deeply connected to the land and their own well-being.
Drawing from principles of mindfulness and self-awareness, Tiny Farms Academy integrates inner capacities into its curriculum to nurture a holistic understanding of sustainable growing and living. The curriculum consists of two major components: field work and inner work. Each component is made up of six workshops. The field work element covers the fundamentals of organic market gardening, while the inner work element focuses on self-connection, building relationships with others, and identifying one’s personal purpose. Participants are also introduced to the societal context of agriculture, learning about the administrative and organizational aspects of setting up a small-scale farming business.
The workshops incorporated conscious practices for participants, including mindfulness meditation, reflective walks, and embodiment exercises. The online workshops feature guided meditations, reflective journaling exercises, and peer-group discussions on personal values and goals.
These consciousness-based approaches were chosen for their ability to enhance self-awareness, empathy, nature connection, and personal and communal resilience—based on the hypothesis that these qualities and inner capacities are important for the well-being and resilience of farmers, helping them navigate the internal and external changes and uncertainties of our current era.

8.3. Outcomes and Impact

Data collection for monitoring and evaluation includes pre- and post-program surveys, participant interviews, and direct observation. The evaluation process tracks progress, measures outcomes, and gathers feedback for continuous refinement. Surveys and interviews provided valuable insights, leading to adjustments in the curriculum and the introduction of brief feedback surveys after each session to better capture participant experiences.
Participants reported varying degrees of inner growth, with many discovering new methods and expanding their perspectives. Some found clarity in their life purpose through self-reflection exercises, while others appreciated the supportive community, gaining renewed optimism for their future plans. Overall, the combination of hands-on learning, peer support, and introspection helped participants forge a deeper connection to nature and gain a clearer understanding of their personal values and goals.
On an individual level, participants reported adopting more sustainable lifestyle practices, such as reducing food waste and engaging in farming activities. These changes reflect a heightened awareness of the interconnectedness between personal actions and their environmental impact. Group dynamics also showed improvement, with greater cooperation and enhanced collective problem-solving skills, strengthening community bonds. Ten out of forty participants have begun initiating their own farming projects, while others reported improved well-being and a renewed sense of purpose.
Participants also believe the transformations facilitated by Tiny Farms Academy extend beyond individual growth, sparking broader systemic change. Emerging signs of this transformation include new relationships, fresh insights, and improved collaboration within the local food system. The Academy fosters a growing community dedicated to reimagining agricultural practices, underscoring its potential to drive systemic change that reaches beyond its immediate sphere of influence.

8.4. Learnings

Managing expectations among participants with diverse backgrounds, personal barriers to mindfulness practices, and large group sizes posed notable challenges. Last year, accommodating 40 participants per location proved too ambitious, leading to a reduction to 30 individuals per site for a more intimate learning environment. Regular feedback mechanisms help to proactively address challenges as they arise.
Strong social connections among participants enrich the learning experience and foster a supportive community. The program benefits from robust community partnerships, dedicated facilitators, and the flexibility to adapt content to local contexts. These factors amplify the program’s reach and effectiveness, empowering individuals to contribute to sustainable farming and holistic living.
Tiny Farms Academy shows significant potential for replication and scaling in other communities. A strategic scaling initiative is underway, with plans to establish Academy-Farms in every region, promoting the concept of small-scale agriculture and supporting individuals on their personal growth journeys. Key considerations for expansion include securing sustainable funding, building facilitator capacity, and ensuring the quality of the program is maintained.
By sharing best practices and lessons learned, Tiny Farms Academy aims to facilitate the wider adoption of sustainable agriculture practices and transformative education initiatives, empowering individuals and communities to embrace sustainable living and cultivate a healthier, more resilient future.
The Academy is also expanding its inner work program offerings, integrating personal growth practices with organic farming methodologies. New learning formats, tailored for teams and organizations, are being introduced to foster transformative experiences for all participants. The goal is to bridge personal development with sustainable farming principles, promoting a deeper understanding of oneself and a greater appreciation for the natural world.
In contrast to the other case studies, Tiny Farms Academy foregrounds place-based, experiential learning as a pathway for inner development within the IDG framework. Participants reported increased clarity of personal values and life purpose (being), alongside a strengthened sense of agency and responsibility for the environmental impacts of everyday choices (thinking), which translated into cooperative group dynamics and peer-supported problem-solving (relating and collaborating). As with the other cases, these inner and relational shifts supported purposeful action (acting), expressed here through the adoption of sustainable lifestyles, initiation of new farming projects, and the emergence of locally embedded food-system initiatives with potential for wider systemic change.

9. Case Study 5: Deepening the Relationship Between the Spirit of the Farmer and the Spirit of Nature, in Koka, Japan

9.1. Context

Shumei Natural Agriculture, gaining momentum both in Japan and internationally, offers a transformative approach to farming that fosters a deeper connection to nature and the sacredness of life. This case study will examine how the practice of Natural Agriculture nurtures a profound respect for nature, gratitude, and unity between people and the environment. By embracing the interconnectedness of all living beings and striving for harmony with nature, Natural Agriculture practitioners reconnect with traditional wisdom and their own inherent abilities, while creating positive ripple effects within their communities, including those who benefit from the food they produce.
Natural Agriculture (NA) is a spiritually grounded farming approach created by Mokichi Okada, the founder of Shumei, to foster deep respect for nature. This method involves cultivating crops without additives, fertilizers, or pesticides, and using heirloom seeds. Central to NA is the belief that love, respect for nature, and gratitude are essential to producing healthy food.
NA programs encourage participants to see themselves as integral expressions of nature, recognizing that nature is alive and responsive to our thoughts and actions. NA farmers view the natural world as a conscious partner in the growing process, believing that by listening to and observing nature with an open heart, individuals can discover its inherent beauty and divinity.

9.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

Founded in 2003, Shigaraki No Sato is a Natural Agriculture (NA) demonstration farm rooted in the concept of Satoyama—living in harmony with nature. It serves as the headquarters for the Natural Agriculture Network and its associated programs, while collaborating with Shumei’s Miho Museum and the Miho School to broaden the reach of NA. The farm spans 6 acres, featuring rice paddies, vegetable and tea fields, bee hives, and two traditional Japanese farmhouses.
The primary aim of Shigaraki No Sato is to deepen the connection between people and nature, presenting Natural Agriculture as a sustainable way of farming and living in balance with the environment. As a demonstration farm, it acts as a catalyst for both inner and outer transformation, promoting the practice and support of NA among farmers, visitors, community members, and consumers.
Farmers at Shigaraki No Sato are taught the principles of nature and encouraged to spend time alone in nature, allowing for a deep connection and transformative experience. Through training programs and workshops, they are guided in mindful, conscious interactions with the land, seeds, and soil—such as planting rice paddies barefoot to enhance sensory awareness. By farming without additives, farmers learn to release control and trust the inherent power of natural elements.
Visitors to the farm are introduced to a way of life in harmony with nature through the two restored, 200-year-old Kominkas—traditional Japanese farmhouses. These structures embody harmony in their design and materials, illustrating how traditional values, wisdom, and aesthetics can be integrated into contemporary life. Additionally, Shumei offers a “seed to table” experience at the nearby Miho Museum restaurant and farmer’s market, where visitors can enjoy NA food prepared with local, seasonal, and native ingredients, experiencing the life force within the food.
By practicing mindfulness, deep listening, and observing the beauty of nature, farmers undergo a mindset shift, deepening their connection to the natural world. Visitors to Shigaraki No Sato also experience firsthand the harmony between humans and nature and its profound impact on their sense of well-being.

9.3. Outcomes and Impacts

Farmers practicing Natural Agriculture often describe profound inner transformations, including a deeper sense of connection to nature, themselves, and others. They speak of cultivating qualities such as faith, patience, humility, and gratitude, and many report feeling part of a greater whole, accompanied by an enhanced sense of well-being.
One NA tea farmer shared, “It’s about learning from nature; in doing so, we saw the quality of our tea improve. We listen to what the crops tell us, observing and sensing to understand what they need.” By choosing to trust in the natural resilience of their crops, NA farmers place their faith in the rhythms of the growing cycle and develop a deep appreciation for nature’s gifts.
Many NA farmers and consumers describe a shift in perspective as they discover the vitality—or life force—within the plants they grow and eat. One practitioner reflected:
“When you have a sense that there are spirits in nature, and spirits of plants, you have a different relationship with them… So you have a higher regard for them, when you prep, when you plant, when you pray for them to grow like a child, to grow well. And when they grow well, and give you fruits, you give them gratitude, you thank them. So your relationship with them is very different.”
Through its programs and workshops, Shigaraki No Sato has inspired hundreds of farmers to adopt Natural Agriculture. It serves as the hub for the Shumei Natural Agriculture Network, a growing community of over 1,000 NA farmers across Japan. In addition to sharing knowledge and practices, the network is actively developing a NA seed bank to preserve native and heirloom seed varieties—supporting climate resilience and strengthening community ties through the protection of genetic diversity.
Scientific studies at Shigaraki No Sato have shown that Natural Agriculture contributes to biodiversity conservation and improved soil health [53]. As a result, Shumei NA farmers are restoring abandoned rice paddies throughout the region using NA methods and enhancing ecological richness by cultivating more than 300 varieties of rice.

9.4. Learnings

Natural Agriculture emphasizes cultivating deep, reciprocal relationships between farmers and nature—often leading to profound inner transformation, though such changes can be difficult to quantify. To better understand and document both personal and environmental impacts, Shumei continues to gather regular feedback from NA practitioners and visitors to Shigaraki No Sato.
Interest in the NA approach is growing among both gardeners and farmers, driven by increasing concerns over agrochemical use, a desire for greater climate resilience, and a deepening awareness of the link between human and soil health. However, agriculture remains a less appealing career path for many young people in Japan. Some NA farmers also face challenges in practicing the method consistently or full-time, often supplementing their income with additional work.
Despite these challenges, several larger-scale producers are beginning to transition to NA, signaling its potential for broader adoption. Since the founding of Shigaraki No Sato, NA community projects and demonstration farms have been established in Brazil, the Philippines, Zambia, Nepal, the United States, and across Europe. NA farmers are also increasingly sharing their knowledge and experiences through virtual tutorials, courses, and webinars.
Distinct from the other case studies, Natural Agriculture places an explicitly relational and spiritual orientation to nature at the center of inner development within the IDG framework. Farmers describe cultivating qualities such as faith, humility, patience, gratitude, and reverence (being), alongside a shift toward learning from nature through attentive observation and trust in ecological rhythms (thinking). As with the other cases, these inner shifts support relational and collective capacities (relating and collaborating), uniquely expressed here through seed stewardship, farmer networks, and biodiversity restoration, culminating in sustained regenerative action (acting) across landscapes and communities.
Looking ahead, Shumei remains committed to amplifying the voices of farmers and spreading the message of Natural Agriculture through hands-on experiences and demonstration farms that inspire a deeper connection with nature and more harmonious ways of living.

10. Case Study 6: Promoting Universal Human Values Through Natural Farming Practices in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, India

10.1. Context

Shramik Bharti is an organization that has been actively promoting “Avartansheel Kheti,” a natural, cyclical farming practice based on Madhyasth Darshan philosophy, among small and marginal farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Despite financial incentives to adopt natural farming methods, many farmers have reverted to chemical farming, highlighting the need for a deeper, more holistic approach.
The promotion of natural farming by Shramik Bharti faced challenges, as financial motivation alone proved insufficient. To address this, Shramik Bharti introduced 200 farmers in Uttar Pradesh to a knowledge system called Universal Human Values (UHV), grounded in Madhyasth Darshan.
Madhyasth Darshan, or ‘Co-existential Philosophy,’ provides profound insights into reality and human nature. The term ‘Darshan,’ from Sanskrit, means to “see” or to gain a vision of reality as it truly is. This comprehensive knowledge system explores and clarifies all dimensions of human life: the experiential, rational, emotional, and occupational. By applying this understanding, individuals can live with greater care, love, generosity, kindness, and benevolence.

10.2. Implementation and Consciousness Approach

The project aimed to instill a holistic perspective towards life, nature, and farming among the participants through the following objectives:
  • Develop a holistic perspective towards life and profession, happiness, and prosperity based on a correct understanding of human reality and existence.
  • Foster the competence to understand and participate in the harmony of nature/existence.
  • Cultivate the ability to conceptualize a humane society characterized by an undivided society and universal human order.
Information on farmer transformation was collected using structured, multi-method approaches during workshops and follow-up activities, capturing both quantitative and qualitative insights from 200 small and marginal farmers across districts in Uttar Pradesh. Pre- and post-workshop self-assessment questionnaires measured immediate shifts in understanding of key Universal Human Values (UHV) concepts, including trust, respect, harmony, happiness, prosperity, and natural farming practices, with outcome indicators focused on holistic life perspectives and relationships. Qualitative insights were gathered through participant observations, verbal feedback, and facilitated group discussions, and were analyzed thematically across all participants, including the use of word clouds to explore evolving perceptions of life goals and farming practices.
Five non-residential, two-day follow-up workshops—integrated with end-of-project focus group discussions—were conducted to assess the sustainability of both inner and outer changes over time. Farmers were encouraged to involve family members or neighbors to broaden perspectives. As participants were already engaged in Shramik Bharti’s Natural Farming Program, regular ongoing interactions enabled continued observation of transformations at the individual, family, community, and agricultural practice levels.

10.3. Outcomes and Impact

The process involved self-investigation and self-exploration. Whatever truths or realities were discovered were presented as proposals, with participants guided to verify them in their own way, based on their Natural Acceptance and subsequent Experiential Validation. The entire existence became the lab, and every activity served as a source of reflection. The images below (Figure 2) capture how farmers described their values and priorities before and after participating in the workshops. They now recognize that happiness and prosperity can be achieved continuously by developing harmony with themselves, their families, society, and nature.
Before attending the program, some farmers believed happiness was tied to accomplishments and possessions, while others associated it with physical comforts and external factors. However, after the program, their perspective shifted. They now understand happiness as living in harmony with family, society, and nature. The emphasis has moved from accumulating material wealth to nurturing relationships.
The participating farmers are members of Farmer Producer Organizations established in their districts by Shramik Bharti. After attending the program, they reported a shift in their behavior towards fellow members, becoming more compassionate and trustworthy. They now prioritize cooperation over competition.
Some farmers initially practiced chemical farming but experimented with natural farming on a small plot of land. After attending the Universal Human Values (UHV) workshops, they recognized the value of natural farming for themselves, their families, society, and the environment. This shift in their understanding of nature and farming practices is illustrated in Figure 2, where they express their commitment to adopting natural farming to produce safe and nutritious food for all while enriching and protecting Mother Earth.
Overall, UHV education has transformed farmers’ mindsets, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and practices that were previously based on assumptions. The program prompted a shift from self-centered views to a more holistic understanding of life, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. Participants embraced the idea of mutual enrichment and harmonious co-existence with nature. This new understanding is expected to strengthen their commitment to natural farming, ensuring the long-term sustainability of food production.

10.4. Learnings

UHV workshops significantly altered the participants’ mindsets, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, leading to a holistic understanding of life. The experiential learning approach proved effective in fostering self-awareness and personal growth, promoting a commitment to sustainable farming practices. This model holds potential for wider application across different farming communities, with the need for continuous and intensive mentoring to support ongoing learning and practice. Challenges included accommodating farmers’ busy schedules and adverse weather conditions, which were mitigated by adjusting the workshop schedule. Overall, the initiative demonstrated that integrating UHV into farming practices can lead to sustainable and fulfilling agricultural practices.
The UHV intervention demonstrates how explicit values education can reframe farmers’ understanding of happiness, prosperity, and purpose through processes of self-investigation and experiential validation. These shifts in being and thinking supported, as in the other case studies, more compassionate and cooperative relationships (relating and collaborating) and sustained engagement with natural farming practices (acting).

11. Discussion

The preceding case studies offer valuable community insights into an emerging paradigm of agriculture—one that is not only a means of sustainable food production but a transformative practice for human and planetary well-being. This evolving approach cultivates deeper relationships: within the self, among communities, and with the Earth. These initiatives reflect an approach that integrates human values, inner development, and holistic sustainability. Importantly, they do so through different, contextually grounded pathways rather than a single uniform model. When read through the lens of the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework, they collectively illustrate how inner capacities (being and thinking) are cultivated alongside relational and collective capacities (relating and collaborating) to support sustained action (acting) in agricultural contexts.
Whether expressed through spiritual ecology, experiential learning, or natural farming, each initiative highlights how farmers—when supported in nurturing self-awareness and shared values—can become agents of systemic change, fostering care, cooperation, and regeneration in their communities and ecosystems [17,54]. Together, the case studies suggest that inner development can be activated through multiple entry points—including embodied practice, values-based reflection, place-based learning, community mental health action, and relational engagement with nature—each shaped by local culture, needs, and constraints. These varied entry points map onto different IDG dimensions, yet converge in their capacity to strengthen agency, coherence, and collective responsibility.
Across diverse cultural and geographic settings, these efforts are united by a fundamental insight: a farmer’s agricultural practice both impacts and is shaped by their inner life. Farming is revealed not simply as a technical or transactional act, but also as a deeply relational practice, shaped by the farmer’s intentions, worldview, and sense of meaning—the deeper leverage points for change [55]. At times, tensions can arise between a farmer’s inner values and the external pressures of industrial systems; the programs highlighted here help to alleviate these tensions by supporting right relations—with self, community, and land. In IDG terms, this reflects alignment between inner orientation (being), sense-making (thinking), and outward practice (acting).
At the heart of these transformations lies the integration of inner development and human and ecological values into agricultural education and practice. Participants moved beyond materialistic or self-focused perspectives toward a more integrated understanding of purpose and responsibility, extending from the individual to the collective and the ecological. While the specific mechanisms varied across initiatives, a shared pattern emerged in which strengthened inner capacities supported relational coherence and more sustained engagement with regenerative practices. This pattern mirrors the developmental logic of the IDG framework, in which inner growth enables relational trust and collaborative capacity, forming the foundation for effective action.
In addition, some studies (Case Studies 1 and 2) showed that activities that strengthen self-awareness, emotional regulation, and compassion can help farmers navigate the psychological pressures of precarious livelihoods, climate variability, and social isolation. Practices of reflection, mindfulness, and collective learning were not only tools for ecological transition but also buffers against anxiety and burnout. In this sense, inner development functioned as both a personal resource and a collective one, enabling farming communities to sustain motivation, solidarity, and hope in times of adversity (Case Study 6). These findings particularly underscore the importance of the being and relating dimensions in contexts of chronic stress and uncertainty.
The case studies also highlight the practical importance of context-sensitive facilitation and sustained mentoring. Transformational shifts in mindset and practice do not happen overnight. Participants benefited from being part of a supported process—one that was culturally appropriate and honored their lived realities, allowed space for inquiry, and built trust over time. Flexibility, patience, and community engagement were essential to the success of each initiative, particularly in overcoming practical challenges such as time constraints, skepticism, or environmental stressors. This underscores that inner development is not a standalone intervention, but a relational process that unfolds through continuity, trust, and skilled facilitation. Such conditions are critical for strengthening the collaborating dimension of the IDGs in real-world settings.
Another powerful insight arising from the case studies is the role of natural acceptance and experiential validation in supporting lasting transformation. Rather than relying on external authority or prescriptive methods, the learning processes described allowed participants to test ideas in the context of their own lives, relationships, and ecosystems. This approach resonates with adult learning theory and transformative learning models, which emphasize the importance of sovereign meaning-making, lived experience, and reflection [56]. These processes appear particularly important for deepening thinking capacities related to complexity, systems awareness, and long-term orientation.
In many instances, this led to a reframing of happiness, prosperity, and success—from measures of individual achievement or material gain to qualities of harmony, interconnectedness, and relational well-being. Trust, compassion, and mutual care emerged as key values that hold the potential to transform the culture within producer groups and farming communities. These shifts not only supported individual mental health and emotional well-being but also enhanced social cohesion and collective resilience [26]—important outcomes in rural areas where isolation, uncertainty, and stress are common [57]. Here, the interdependence of being, relating, and collaborating becomes especially visible.
A central theme across all the case studies is a shift in the relationship with nature. Whether through Shumei Natural Agriculture or values-based natural farming practices (Case Study 5), participants began to recognize nature as a living partner, worthy of respect and care, not a resource to be dominated or depleted. This relational view aligns with Indigenous and ecological worldviews that understand the Earth as a sacred, interdependent system of life [58]. By deepening their spiritual and emotional connection to land, farmers became more motivated to protect, nourish, and regenerate the ecosystems they are part of. Their agricultural choices—such as shifting to natural or regenerative farming—became expressions of gratitude and responsibility rather than obligation or trend. This echoes a growing call within global sustainability movements to integrate inner and outer dimensions of change [38,39,59], and highlights how the acting dimension of the IDGs is most durable when grounded in inner and relational transformation.

12. Limitations

It is also important to acknowledge critiques and limitations associated with spiritual, ecological, or inner-development approaches to agriculture. Such perspectives may be criticized for romanticizing agrarian life, obscuring power relations, and underestimating the structural constraints that shape farmers’ decision-making, including market volatility, debt, land tenure insecurity, and policy lock-ins. Agrarian political economy and sustainability transition scholarship consistently emphasize that farming practices are embedded within broader socio-economic systems that strongly condition what forms of change are feasible, regardless of individual values or intentions [60,61].
These concerns are particularly salient in practice. Many farmers—especially smallholders—are attempting to survive in the commercial marketplace and in a system where industrial and Green Revolution agricultural practices are commonly promoted by private and public extension services. In some contexts, farmers have also been effectively ‘educated out’ of their traditional or place-based farming approaches, resulting in the erosion of local ecological knowledge, confidence, and autonomy. Under such conditions, transitions toward more sustainable or regenerative practices are rarely straightforward, and farmers’ scope for choice may be severely constrained.
From a behavior-change perspective, there is substantial evidence that individual awareness, intention, or pro-environmental values alone are insufficient to drive sustained change. In agricultural settings, farmers may hold strong ecological values yet remain unable to act on them due to social norms, debt, risk exposure, habit, labor shortages, regulatory pressures, or lack of supportive infrastructure [62,63,64]. Similarly, research advocating distributed or practice-based understandings of behavior emphasizes that farming decisions emerge from networks of actors, technologies, institutions, and routines rather than from isolated individual agency [65].
Against this backdrop, the relevance of inner development for farmers’ well-being may be questioned in contexts of economic precarity, where income stability, access to markets, and basic resources are immediate and pressing concerns. Structural factors are undeniably crucial, and no framework focused on inner capacities alone can resolve these challenges. Inner development cannot substitute for economic reform, supportive policy environments, or institutional change, nor should it be framed as a moral obligation imposed on already overburdened farming communities.
At the same time, evidence from the case studies suggests that inner capacities—such as resilience, self-awareness, and emotional regulation—should not be understood as a luxury. Rather, they function as complementary levers that support farmers through the psychological and relational demands of transition. Drawing on Bakker et al. [18] and Ocsai [21], shifts in attitudes, values, and deeper philosophical orientation are best understood as enabling farmers to cope with uncertainty, sustain motivation, and navigate the inevitable frictions of change, rather than as primary drivers of transformation. In this sense, inner development works most productively in tandem with economic, technical, and policy interventions, enhancing farmers’ well-being while also increasing the likelihood that structural and ecological changes—once enabled—can be meaningfully adopted and sustained.
Recognizing both the limits and the potential of inner development strengthens the case for integrative approaches that attend simultaneously to individual well-being, collective agency, and the systemic conditions required for sustainable and regenerative agricultural transformation.

13. Conclusions

In an era marked by ecological crisis, social fragmentation, and mental health challenges [66], these examples show that agriculture can be reimagined not only as a means of food production but as a transformative space for cultivating deeper relationships—within ourselves, among communities, and with the Earth. Emerging initiatives around the world are embracing holistic, value-based approaches that integrate sustainable farming with personal development and community well-being. This integration of the inner and outer dimensions of agriculture suggests a paradigm shift: from extractive, industrial models prioritizing economic growth to regenerative, consciousness-based practices that honor the interconnectedness of all life and prioritize planetary well-being.
The insights drawn from the case studies reflect an important evolution in our understanding of sustainability: that true transformation needs to integrate both the inner and outer dimensions of life.
As these examples suggest, personal transformation and ecological regeneration are not separate tasks—they are deeply intertwined. It follows that, to cultivate thriving food systems, we must also support the flourishing of the people who tend them. Programs grounded in values, inner development, and relationship-based learning have the potential to unlock this integrated approach to sustainability. They emphasize that transformation begins from within, and that nurturing inner landscapes is just as important as healing outer ones.
At the same time, these community-based initiatives remain underrepresented in the academic literature, despite evidence of their meaningful impacts on lived experience at local and grassroots levels. Greater scholarly awareness and systematic research are needed to better understand how such approaches influence farmer well-being, decision-making, and long-term engagement with sustainable and regenerative practices. Further empirical work—using diverse, context-sensitive methodologies and informed by community perspectives—is required to explore both the potential and the limitations of these approaches, and to examine how they interact with broader structural, economic, and policy conditions.
This integrated approach—connecting the mind, heart, soil, and community—has profound implications for how we design and implement agricultural and rural development programs. It calls for educational frameworks that prioritize experiential learning, mentorship, and explicit values. It also invites us to acknowledge and respect the inner lives of farmers as central to the cultivation of healthy food, vibrant communities, and a flourishing planet.
Ultimately, these reflections affirm that farming is more than a technical act—it is a moral, spiritual, and relational practice. When aligned with care, purpose, and interconnectedness, agriculture may become a force for healing not only the Earth, but also the human spirit. Recognizing, studying, and learning from these emerging community practices offers a promising direction for future research at the intersection of agriculture, mental health, and planetary sustainability.
