Cover Story: Long-term exposure to air pollution and other associated environmental factors, namely greenspace and noise, may impact cognitive development in children. Research to date has investigated these environmental factors separately with modest population samples. This study followed over 12,000 children in England from the age of 9 months for 17 years to examine the association between life-time exposure to PM2.5 at home and school and cognitive test scores longitudinally, while accounting for greenness, road noise and other individual, family, school and areal characteristics that could influence cognitive performance. We observed little evidence of associations between PM2.5 and cognitive performance with or without adjustment for greenness and road noise, at any age in this study. View this paper
