Cover Story: One theory is that neural changes make loved one-related stimuli more salient. The behavioral activation system (BAS) is one mechanism responsible for a range of motivational outcomes. This study was the first to investigate behavioral activation system sensitivity to a loved one by validating a new measure based on the BAS Scale in a sample of young adults experiencing romantic love. It then assessed the association between BAS sensitivity to a loved one and the intensity of romantic love in a subsample experiencing romantic love for less than 2 years. The findings shed light on the mechanisms that may contribute to romantic love and provide additional evidence that romantic love is associated with increased salience to stimuli from a loved one. This suggests that making loved one-related stimuli more salient is an important step in the evolution of romantic love. View this paper
