Cover Story: Mineral inclusions in diamonds represent a window into the minerals and rocks in the upper mantle, and thus provide a unique opportunity to gain crucial information about the chemical and physical environment during their formation in the upper mantle. Polishing-exposed mineral inclusions in diamonds from the No. 50 kimberlite diatreme of China include olivine, chromite, garnet, orthopyroxene, Ca carbonate, magnesite, dolomite, norsethite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, troilite, unknown hydrous magnesium silicate, Fe-rich phase, etc. This study using electron probe microanalysis and microscopy shows that a metasomatic enrichment event occurred in the diamond source region below the North China Craton and that the diamonds were likely formed by solid-state growth under metasomatic conditions.
