Cover Story: Double perovskites have attracted enormous attention recently. In particular, compounds containing 4d and 5d elements appear to be interesting for the study of magnetism due to the complex interplay of electron correlations, spin-orbit coupling and exchange interactions. The ruthenate material La2MgRuO6 crystallizes in a double perovskite structure. However, the corresponding compound Y2MgRuO6 with smaller A-site ions has not been reported yet. Trials to synthesize this material with conventional solid-state reaction were not successful. We managed to synthesize up to ∼40 µm sized single crystals of this new double perovskite—Y2MgRuO6—with the floating zone technique. In contrast to La2MgRuO6, the positive Weiss constant indicates ferromagnetic exchange interactions in Y2MgRuO6. View this paper
