Cover Story: This study aims to develop a miniaturized CMOS-integrated silicon-based microfluidic system, compatible with a standard CMOS process, to enable the characterization and manipulation of live and dead yeast cells (as model for bio-particle organisms) using the DEP technique. One of the most critical issues related to DEP-based microfluidic devices is that the targeted cells' DEP spectra should accurately be known. In this research, DEP spectrum analysis of various cell suspensions with various medium conductivities were investigated thoroughly by finite element simulation and experimentally. This study presented an optimized trapping platform for both cell detection and separation applications based on the distinct responses of live and dead cells and their surrounding media. The findings confirmed the device’s capability for efficient, rapid and selective cell separation. View this paper.
