Cover Story: Climate change affects the environmental component of the “Disease Triangle”, causing a change in predictability of host and pathogen interactions. Recently, pitch canker disease, caused by the fungus Fusarium circinatum, has been causing outbreaks in the southeastern United States. In order to better predict future outbreaks, we looked at the effects of increased temperatures on growth and virulence of different F. circinatum isolates collected in Florida and Georgia. This multi-pathogen and multi-host evaluation shed light on how F. circinatum might respond to increased temperatures and provided additional, more virulent material for use in screening tests by the USDA Forest Service Resistance Screening Center, in Asheville, North Carolina.
