Cover Story: Earth‑scale functional datasets—curves, surfaces, and even 4D fields—are now common. However, existing tools choke on irregular sampling and increasing dimensionality. We introduce Bayesian Scalable Functional Data Analysis (BSFDA), a kernel‑based framework that simultaneously selects basis functions and intrinsic rank. By coupling sparsity‑promoting priors with an active‑subspace optimizer, BSFDA preserves high-dimensional complexities while scaling linearly with the data size. Simulations and real‑world studies, from sparse CD4 immune trajectories to wind‑speed curves and global ocean temperatures, demonstrate its efficacy. Overall, BSFDA offers an adaptive, continuous, and scalable tool for modern functional data analysis across diverse scientific domains. View this paper
