Cover Story: Peptide-based drug delivery systems have benefits compared to synthetic polymers due to their better biocompatibility, biodegradability, and controlled molecular weight. Peptide-based lysosomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, dendrimers, and micelles can be used via intravenous administration and have the ability to penetrate the blood–brain barrier. An overview of nontoxic drug delivery systems was given, and prospective trends in the development of drug delivery systems were discussed. The use of peptide-based carriers for the delivery of various toxic drugs, mostly anticancer drugs with limiting bioavailability, was highlighted. The platforms are utilized as peptide–drug conjugates, injectable biodegradable particles, and depots for delivering small molecule pharmaceutical substances (500 Da) and therapeutic proteins. View this paper.
