Cover Story: The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural and functional support to brain cells and has important roles during development, adulthood, and in brain diseases. Altered expression of ECM-associated genes is associated with seizure, neuropathic pain, cerebellar ataxia, and age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence implicates the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1 in regulating the expression of ECM-associated genes in different brain cell types. Gene expression changes in microglia play an important role in regulating a brain specific form of ECM called perineuronal nets (PNNs). View this paper
