Cover Story: The Schrödinger bridge problem (SBP) finds the most likely stochastic evolution between two probability distributions given a prior stochastic evolution. As well as applications in the natural sciences, problems of this kind have important applications in machine learning, such as dataset alignment and hypothesis testing. While the theory behind this problem is relatively mature, scalable numerical recipes to estimate the Schrödinger bridge remain an active area of research. We prove an equivalence between the SBP and maximum likelihood estimation enabling direct application of successful machine learning techniques. We propose a numerical procedure to estimate SBPs using Gaussian process regression and demonstrate the practical use of our approach in numerical simulations and experiments. View this paper

Impeller trimming is an economical method for broadening the range of application of a given pump, but it can destroy operational stability and efficiency. In this study, entropy production theory was utilized to analyze the variation of energy loss...

In this treatment of random dynamical systems, we consider the existence—and identification—of conditional independencies at nonequilibrium steady-state. These independencies underwrite a particular partition of states, in which internal states are s...

Dempster–Shafer theory (DST), which is widely used in information fusion, can process uncertain information without prior information; however, when the evidence to combine is highly conflicting, it may lead to counter-intuitive results. Moreover, th...

We study fluid distributions endowed with hyperbolic symmetry, which share many common features with Lemaitre–Tolman–Bondi (LTB) solutions (e.g., they are geodesic, shearing, and nonconformally flat, and the energy density is inhomogeneous). As such,...
