Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The gut microbiome is increasingly being recognized as a key regulator of metabolic health and immune function. With mounting evidence linking gut microbial composition to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammation-related disorders, the development of microbiome-targeted therapeutic strategies has become a focal point in biotechnology and applied microbiology.
Probiotics—live microorganisms with health-promoting effects—have long been explored as modulators of gut health. However, limitations such as their viability, stability, and colonization efficiency under various physiological conditions have led to growing interest in postbiotics. Postbiotics, including non-viable probiotics (whole-cell postbiotics), microbial cell components, and bioactive fermentation metabolites, represent a promising next-generation alternative. These agents function independently of bacterial viability and offer enhanced safety, stability, and regulatory compliance, while still delivering immunomodulatory and metabolic benefits.
This Special Issue, entitled “Recent Advances in Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology”, aims to showcase the latest original research and comprehensive reviews in the field. We invite contributions focused on novel microbial products, the functional characterization of postbiotics, host–microbe interactions, and microbiome engineering for therapeutic purposes.
Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Isolation, characterization, and mechanisms of probiotics/postbiotics (e.g., heat-killed probiotics, microbial metabolites, and cell wall components).
- Biotechnological production and formulation of microbiome-based therapeutics.
- Comparative studies of probiotics vs. postbiotics in disease models.
- Immune modulation and gut barrier function enhancement by microbial components.
- Diet–microbiome interactions and metabolic health.
- Advances in microbiome analysis and metagenomics.
- Synthetic biology approaches in microbiome engineering.
- Microbiome-driven personalized nutrition and therapy.
- Clinical translation and safety assessment of microbiome-based interventions.
All original research articles, review articles, and short communications that address recent advances in biotechnology and microbiome applications are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
