Innovation in Molecular Breeding and Seed Development of Fiber Crops

Dear Colleagues,

Cotton is a highly valuable crop grown for fiber, protein, and seed oil. It originated from the hybridization of two diploid cotton species (with A and D genomes) 1–2 million years ago. It was domesticated ∼5000 years ago in Mexico and then further developed in the United States, resulting in modern cotton varieties with long, white fibers suitable for textiles; wild cotton species have sparse, coarse brown fibers. The process of fiber cell development is multifaceted, encompassing several stages, namely initiation, elongation, secondary cell wall thickening, and maturation. Among these stages, fiber elongation is of particular interest to researchers and growers, as it directly affects fiber quality and value.

This Special Issue focuses on innovations in the molecular breeding and seed development of cotton and other fiber crops. We welcome high-quality, interdisciplinary studies from disparate research fields including innovation, molecular breeding, fiber and seed development, etc. Original research articles and reviews are accepted.
