Machining chromium–nickel alloy steel is challenging due to its material properties, such as high strength and toughness. These properties often lead to tool damage and degradation of tool life, which overall impacts the production time, cost, and quality of the product. Therefore, it is essential to investigate early signs of tool damage to determine the effective machining conditions for chromium–nickel alloy steel, thereby increasing tool life and improving product quality. In this study, the early signs of tool wear were observed in a physical vapor deposition (PVD) carbide-coated tool (Seco Tools, Björnbacksvägen, Sweden) during the machining of X5CrNi18-10 steel under both dry and wet conditions. A finish turning operation was performed on the outer diameter (OD) of the workpiece with a 0.4 mm nose radius tool. At the early stage, the tool was examined from the functional side (f–side) and the passive side (p–side). The results indicate that dry machining leads to increased coating removal, more heat generation, and visible damage, such as pits and surface scratches. By comparison, wet machining helps reduce heat and wear, thereby improving tool life and machining quality. These findings suggest that a coolant must be used when machining chromium–nickel alloy steel with a PVD carbide-coated tool. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical, morphological, and wear properties of SiO2-filled tri-axial warp-knitted (TWK) glass fiber-reinforced vinyl ester matrix composites, with a focus on void fraction, tensile, flexural, hardness, and wear behavior. Adding SiO2 fillers reduced void fractions, enhancing composite strength, with values ranging from 1.63% to 5.31%. Tensile tests revealed that composites with 5 wt% SiO2 (GV1) exhibited superior tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and elongation due to enhanced fiber–matrix interaction. Conversely, composites with 10 wt% SiO2 (GV2) showed decreased tensile performance, indicating increased brittleness. Flexural tests demonstrated that GV1 outperformed GV2, showcasing higher flexural strength, elastic modulus, and deflection, reflecting improved load-bearing capacity at optimal filler content. Shore D hardness tests confirmed that GV1 had the highest hardness among the specimens. SEM analysis revealed wear behavior under various loads and sliding distances. GV1 exhibited minimal wear loss at lower loads and distances, while higher loads caused significant matrix detachment and fiber damage. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing SiO2 filler content to enhance epoxy composites’ mechanical and tribological performance. Full article

This study examined the integraftion of airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)-based handheld LiDAR, and iPhone LiDAR to inspect forest road networks following forest operations. The goal is to overcome the challenges posed by dense canopy cover and ensure accurate and efficient data collection and mapping. Airborne data were collected using the DJI Matrice 300 RTK UAV equipped with a Zenmuse L2 LiDAR sensor, which achieved a high point density of 285 points/m2 at an altitude of 80 m. Ground-level data were collected using the BLK2GO handheld laser scanner (HPLS) with SLAM methods (LiDAR SLAM, Visual SLAM, Inertial Measurement Unit) and the iPhone 13 Pro Max LiDAR. Data processing included generating DEMs, DSMs, and True Digital Orthophotos (TDOMs) via DJI Terra, LiDAR360 V8, and Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS, with additional processing and merging using CloudCompare V2 and ArcGIS Pro 3.4.0. The pairwise comparison analysis between ALS data and each alternative method revealed notable differences in elevation, highlighting discrepancies between methods. ALS + iPhone demonstrated the smallest deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.011, RMSE = 0.011, RE = 0.003%) and HPLS the larger deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.507, RMSE = 0.542, RE = 0.123%). The findings highlight the potential of fusing point clouds from diverse platforms to enhance forest road mapping accuracy. However, the selection of technology should consider trade-offs among accuracy, cost, and operational constraints. Mobile LiDAR solutions, particularly the iPhone, offer promising low-cost alternatives for certain applications. Future research should explore real-time fusion workflows and strategies to improve the cost-effectiveness and scalability of multisensor approaches for forest road monitoring. Full article

Ultra-fine-grained bainitic (UFGB) steels offer excellent mechanical properties, which can be further improved by applying diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. However, poor adhesion between the coating and substrate remains a key limitation. Since the steel’s microstructure degrades at high temperatures, enhancing adhesion without heating the substrate is essential. This study investigates surface hardening combined with simultaneous nitrogen and hydrogen doping during the Radio Frequency Chemical Vapor Deposition (RFCVD) process to improve coating performance. Varying gas compositions were tested to assess their effects on coating properties. Nitrogen incorporation decreased hardness from 12 GPa to 9 GPa but improved adhesion, while hydrogen limited damage after coating failure. Optimizing the gas mixture led to enhanced adhesion and wear resistance. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirmed that the optimized coatings had the highest sp3 bond content and elevated nitrogen levels. While both hardness and adhesion contributed to wear resistance, no direct link to coating thickness was found. Overall, co-doping with nitrogen and hydrogen is an effective approach to improve adhesion and wear resistance without requiring high processing temperatures or complex equipment. Full article

The use of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) is increasing in the ore industries as advanced technology is available for this type of comminuting. There are important parameters in these devices, which have many effects on productivity. One of the main reasons for damage on the rolls and, therefore, decreases in the machine’s productivity and efficiency is surface wear. This phenomenon must be carefully understood so that it can be controlled as much as possible through the readjustment and optimization of the effective parameters. In this research, the wear mechanism of HPGRs in a production line for iron ore concentrate was investigated. The results showed that there was greater wear at the center of the rolls and that changes to the chemical and physical properties of the incoming iron compared to the design condition reduced the rolls’ lives. The results showed a failure to perform appropriate mechanical adjustment and improper repair and maintenance. Full article

In this study, a Ag/ZrO2 hybrid coating prepared by the sol–gel method on a β-type Ti45Nb alloy was applied by the spin coating technique, and the microstructural, mechanical, electrochemical, and tribological properties of the surface were evaluated in a multi-dimensional manner. The hybrid solution was prepared using zirconium propoxide and silver nitrate and stabilized through a low-temperature two-stage annealing protocol. The crystal structure of the coating was determined by XRD, and the presence of dense tetragonal ZrO2 phase and crystalline Ag phases was confirmed. SEM-EDS analyses revealed a compact coating structure of approximately 1.8 µm thickness with homogeneously distributed Ag nanoparticles on the surface. As a result of the electrochemical corrosion tests, it was determined that the open circuit potential shifted to more noble values, the corrosion current density decreased, and the corrosion rate decreased by more than 70% on the surfaces where the Ag/ZrO2 coating was applied. In the tribological tests, a decrease in the coefficient of friction, narrowing of wear marks, and significant reduction in surface damage were observed in dry and physiological (HBSS) environments. The findings revealed that the Ag/ZrO2 hybrid coating significantly improved the surface performance of the Ti45Nb alloy both mechanically and electrochemically and offers high potential for biomedical implant applications. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study of the structure, phase composition, thermal corrosion, and tribological properties of multilayer gradient coatings based on YSZ/NiCrAlY obtained using detonation spraying. X-ray phase analysis showed that the coatings consist entirely of metastable tetragonal zirconium dioxide (t’-ZrO2) phase stabilized by high temperature and rapid cooling during spraying. SEM analysis confirmed the multilayer gradient phase distribution and high density of the structure. Wear resistance, optical profilometry, wear quantification, and coefficient of friction measurements were used to evaluate the operational stability. The results confirm that the structural parameters of the coating, such as porosity and phase gradient, play a key role in improving its resistance to thermal corrosion and CMAS melt, which makes such coatings promising for use in high-temperature applications. It is shown that a dense and thick coating effectively prevents the penetration of aggressive media, providing a high barrier effect and minimal structural damage. Tribological tests in the temperature range from 21 °C to 650 °C revealed that the best characteristics are observed at 550 °C: minimum coefficient of friction (0.63) and high stability in the stage of stable wear. At room temperature and at 650 °C, there is an increase in wear due to the absence or destabilization of the protective layer. Full article

Pressures applied to horses via nosebands are of growing concern. The current study applied noseband pressure to the head of a dead horse. Pressure sensors were placed on the left nasal bone to record pressures as the noseband was progressively tightened. Tightness increased as predicated by holes in the strap of the noseband (as supplied) through eight steps from two fingers’ space, assessed using the standard International Society for Equitation Science Taper Gauge through to zero space. Sensors were also placed at the midline frontal plane and intra-orally at the level of the second premolar tooth. A strain gauge integrated into the noseband recorded tensions within the noseband at each tightness level, and a digital taper gauge under the noseband recorded forces on the face. Pressures at the left nasal bone rose to 403 kPa, while those at the frontal nasal plane reached 185 kPa. Pressures rose rapidly once the noseband was tightened at the equivalent of 1.4 fingers’ space under the noseband. These findings may help to explain cases of bone and skin damage at the noseband location and indicate the need to ensure that nosebands can accommodate more than the equivalent of 1.4 fingers beneath them in the nasal midline. Given that pressures are expected to rise from those reported here when horses wear bits, locomote, and when the reins are under tension, we conclude that the traditional provision of two fingers’ space should be retained. Enhancing damage tolerance and wear resistance in Al–Si-based alloys under thermomechanical stress remains a key challenge in lightweight structural applications. This study investigates the microstructural and tribomechanical behavior of hypoeutectic Al–Si–(Cu)–Mg alloys with varying Cu:Mg ratios (3:1 vs. 1:3) under a T6 heat treatment. Alloys A and B, with identical Si contents but differing Cu and Mg levels, were subjected to multiscale microstructural characterization and mechanical and wear testing at 25 °C, 150 °C, and 250 °C. Alloy A (Cu-rich) exhibited refined α-Al(FeMn)Si phases and homogeneously dissolved Cu in the Al matrix, promoting lattice contraction and dislocation pinning. In contrast, Alloy B (Mg-rich) retained coarse Mg2Si and residual β-AlFeSi phases, which induced local stress concentrations and thermal instability. Under tribological testing, Alloy A showed slightly higher friction coefficients (0.38–0.43) but up to 26.4% lower wear rates across all temperatures. At 250 °C, Alloy B exhibited a 25.2% increase in the wear rate, accompanied by surface degradation such as delamination and spalling due to β-AlFeSi fragmentation and matrix softening. These results confirm that the Cu:Mg ratio critically influences the dominant hardening mechanism—the solid solution vs. precipitation—and determines the high-temperature performance. Alloy A maintained up to 14.1% higher tensile strength and 22.3% higher hardness, exhibiting greater shear resistance and interfacial stability. This work provides a compositionally guided framework for designing thermally durable Al–Si-based alloys with improved wear resistance under elevated temperature conditions. Full article

Hot work die steel is an alloy steel with good high-temperature performance, which is widely used in mechanical manufacturing, aerospace, and other fields. During the working process of hot working mold steel, it is subjected to high temperature, wear, and other effects, which can lead to a decrease in the surface hardness of the mold, accelerate surface damage, shorten the service life, and reduce the quality of the workpiece. In order to improve the wear resistance of the mold, this paper conducts two surface treatments, chrome plating and nitriding, on the surface of hot work mold steel, and compares the high-temperature wear behavior of the materials after the two surface treatments. The results indicate that the hot work die steel obtained higher surface hardness and wear resistance after nitriding surface modification. After nitriding treatment, the surface of hot work die steel contains ε phase (Fe2–3N), which improves its surface hardness and wear resistance, thus exhibiting better surface hardness and wear resistance than the chrome-plated sample. In this study, the high-temperature wear behavior of hot work die steel after two kinds of surface strengthening treatments was deeply discussed, and the high-temperature wear mechanism of steel after surface strengthening was revealed. It provides a theoretical basis and experimental basis for the surface modification of hot working die steel, and also provides new ideas and methods for improving the service life and workpiece quality of hot working die steel in industrial production. In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of high-temperature wear resistance of hot working die steel after chromium plating and nitriding were systematically compared for the first time, which provided a scientific basis for the selection of surface strengthening technology of hot working die steel and had important academic value and practical application significance. The control of lubricity induced by electric potential is appealing for numerous applications. On the other hand, the high polarity of ionic liquids facilitates the adsorption of equally charged molecules onto polar surfaces. This phenomenon and its consequences are well understood at the nanoscale; however, they have recently garnered significant attention at the macroscale. This study investigates the lubricity of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide, a phosphonium ionic liquid, when used as a neat lubricant in reciprocating sliding under electrically charged conditions. Two different polarities with the same potential were applied to the friction pair of bearing steel against bearing steel while monitoring electrical contact resistance. The lubricity was evaluated through measurements of friction, wear, surface morphology, and composition. It was found that the application of electric potential significantly alters the lubricity of the investigated ionic liquid where a positive potential applied to the ball resulted in the least damaging situation. The recorded electrical contact resistance enabled the monitoring of tribofilm formation during reciprocation. It was found that there was minimal to no separation between interacting surfaces when the ball was changing direction. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive investigation of acoustic emission (AE) characteristics for condition monitoring of rolling bearings in passenger ropeway systems. Through controlled laboratory experiments and field validation across multiple operational ropeways, we establish an optimized AE-based diagnostic framework. Key findings demonstrate that resonant VS150-RIC sensors outperform broadband sensors in defect detection, showing greater energy response at characteristic frequencies for inner race defects. The RMS parameter emerges as a robust diagnostic indicator, with defective bearings exhibiting periodic peaks and higher mean RMS values. Field tests reveal progressive RMS escalation preceding visible damage, enabling predictive maintenance. Furthermore, we develop a novel Paligemma LLM model for automated wear detection using AE time-domain images. The research validates the AE technology’s superiority over conventional vibration methods for low-speed bearing monitoring, providing a scientifically grounded approach for safety-critical ropeway maintenance. The friction surfacing (FS) process has emerged over the past few years as a method for joining both similar and dissimilar materials, for volume damage repair of defective components, and for corrosion protection. The possibility to produce a metallic coating by FS, without melting the material, classifies this technique as distinct from other standard methods. This unconventional deposition method is based on the severe plastic deformation that appears on a rotating metallic rod (consumable material) pressed against the substrate under an axial load. The present study aims to investigate the tribological properties and corrosion resistance provided by the aluminum-based FS coatings deposited onto a structural S235 steel substrate and further modified by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). During the PEO treatment, the formation of a ceramic film is enabled, while the hardness, chemical stability, corrosion, and wear resistance of the modified surfaces are considerably increased. The morpho-structural characteristics and chemical composition of the PEO-modified FS coatings are further investigated using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction. Dry sliding wear testing of the PEO-modified aluminum-based coatings was carried out using a ball-on-disc configuration, while the corrosion resistance was electrochemically evaluated in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The corrosion rates of the aluminum-based coatings decreased significantly when the PEO treatment was applied, while the wear rate was substantially reduced compared to the untreated aluminum-based coating and steel substrate, respectively. The use of plastic materials in the maritime industry is increasing day by day. Plastics are particularly preferred in watercraft due to their lightweight, resistance to water-related damage (such as mold and wear), optical clarity, and high corrosion resistance. In recent years, plastics produced by 3D printing have gained prominence in applications traditionally dominated by conventional plastic materials. Therefore, producing marine-grade materials—such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), which has long been used in the maritime sector—through 3D printing, and understanding their long-term performance, has become increasingly important. In this study, the mechanical behavior, surface roughness, and color changes of ABS+ materials in three different colors (yellow, green, and blue) and with three different infill ratios (50%, 75%, and 100%) were investigated after a salt spray test. Following the salt spray exposure, tensile and bending tests, hardness measurements, surface roughness analyses, and color measurements were conducted and compared with reference samples. The results were evaluated based on filament color and infill ratio. This study underscores the importance of color selection—along with mechanical strength—when designing 3D-printed materials for long-term use in saltwater environments. Full article

Tread braking is still extensively used on freight wagons due to lower purchasing and maintenance costs compared to disk braking. Cast iron brake blocks were replaced by composite materials (organic or sintered) that result in a lower wheel roughness, reducing rolling noise. Unfortunately, composite brake blocks have a lower thermal conductivity, negatively affecting the wheel mechanical behavior as the braking energy is almost entirely dissipated by the wheels, which are therefore subjected to higher temperatures. Mechanical properties of the wheel material, such as yield stress and Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) behavior, markedly decrease with temperature, resulting in higher wear rates and wheel tread damage. Contacted to analyze defects not clearly defined in the current regulations used for maintenance and inspections, the authors surveyed the literature and the technical documentation about tread-braked wheels. The paper provides an updated view about the state-of-the-art of the research on thermomechanical behavior of railway wheels and discusses the implication of the increased thermal stresses generated by composite brake blocks.
