The prospects for long-distance space flights are becoming increasingly realistic, and one of the key factors for their implementation is the creation of sustainable systems for producing food on site. Therefore, the aim of our work is to assess the prospects for using millet in biological life support systems and to create predictive models of yield components for automating plant cultivation control. The study found that stress from hypergravity (800 g, 1200 g, 2000 g, and 3000 g) in the early stages of millet germination does not affect seedlings or yield. In a closed system, millet yield reached 0.31 kg/m2, the weight of 1000 seeds was 8.61 g, and the yield index was 0.06. The paper describes 40 quantitative traits, including six leaf and trichome traits and nine grain traits from the lower, middle and upper parts of the inflorescence. The compiled predictive regression equations allow predicting the accumulation of biomass in seedlings on the 10th and 20th days of cultivation, as well as the weight of 1000 seeds, the number of productive inflorescences, the total above-ground mass, and the number and weight of grains per plant. These equations open up opportunities for the development of computer vision and high-speed plant phenotyping programs that will allow automatic correction of the plant cultivation process and modeling of the required yield. Predicting biomass yield will also be useful in assessing the load on the waste-free processing system for plant waste at planetary stations. Full article

Application of a Multi-Algorithm-Optimized CatBoost Model in Predicting the Strength of Multi-Source Solid Waste Backfilling Materials

Backfilling materials are commonly employed materials in mines for filling mining waste, and the strength of the consolidated backfill formed by the binding material directly influences the stability of the surrounding rock and production safety in mines. The traditional approach to obtaining the strength of the backfill demands a considerable amount of manpower and time. The rapid and precise acquisition and optimization of backfill strength parameters hold utmost significance for mining safety. In this research, the authors carried out a backfill strength experiment with five experimental parameters, namely concentration, cement–sand ratio, waste rock–tailing ratio, curing time, and curing temperature, using an orthogonal design. They collected 174 sets of backfill strength parameters and employed six population optimization algorithms, including the Artificial Ecosystem-based Optimization (AEO) algorithm, Aquila Optimization (AO) algorithm, Germinal Center Optimization (GCO), Sand Cat Swarm Optimization (SCSO), Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), and Walrus Optimization Algorithm (WaOA), in combination with the CatBoost algorithm to conduct a prediction study of backfill strength. The study also utilized the Shapley Additive explanatory (SHAP) method to analyze the influence of different parameters on the prediction of backfill strength. The results demonstrate that when the population size was 60, the AEO-CatBoost algorithm model exhibited a favorable fitting effect (R2 = 0.947, VAF = 93.614), and the prediction error was minimal (RMSE = 0.606, MAE = 0.465), enabling the accurate and rapid prediction of the strength parameters of the backfill under different ratios and curing conditions. Additionally, an increase in curing temperature and curing time enhanced the strength of the backfill, and the influence of the waste rock–tailing ratio on the strength of the backfill was negative at a curing temperature of 50 °C, which is attributed to the change in the pore structure at the microscopic level leading to macroscopic mechanical alterations. When the curing conditions are adequate and the parameter ratios are reasonable, the smaller the porosity rate in the backfill, the greater the backfill strength will be. This study offers a reliable and accurate method for the rapid acquisition of backfill strength and provides new technical support for the development of filling mining technology. Full article

Sustainable development and the circular economy have become key challenges in the modern food sector, calling for innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote the efficient use of resources. The aim of this study was to develop a functional food product by utilizing by-products from chokeberry processing, thereby contributing to circularity in food systems. The integration of design thinking with fermentation of chokeberry pomace is presented in this study as an approach to developing value-added food ingredients. Qualitative consumer research (focus group interviews, n = 36) identified preferences and expectations regarding functional foods containing by-products. Conducted by an interdisciplinary team, the project followed five stages, involving both qualitative and quantitative research. Liquid surface fermentation was performed using Aspergillus niger, selected for its proven ability to enhance the antioxidant capacity and polyphenol content of plant matrices. The optimal process was 2-day fermentation under controlled pH conditions with glucose supplementation, which significantly enhanced the quality and nutritional value of the final product. Antioxidant activity (ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC assays), total polyphenols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins were determined, showing significant increases compared to non-fermented controls. The outcome was the development of a dried, fermented chokeberry pomace product that meets consumer expectations and fulfils sustainability goals through waste reduction and innovative reuse of fruit processing by-products. Plastic waste, particularly poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), negatively impacts the environment and human health. Biotechnology could become an alternative to managing PET waste if enzymes ensure the recovery of terephthalic acid with efficiencies comparable to those of chemical treatments. Recent research has highlighted the potential of fungal cutinases, such as wild-type ANCUT1 (ANCUT1wt) from Aspergillus nidulans, in achieving PET depolymerization. Fungal cutinases’ structures differ from those of bacterial cutinases, while their PET depolymerization mechanism has not been well studied. Here, a reliable model of the ANCUT1wt was obtained using AlphaFold 2.0. Computational chemistry revealed potential cation-binding sites, which had not been described regarding enzymatic activation in fungal cutinases. Moreover, it allowed the prediction of residues with the ability to interact with a PET trimer that were mutation candidates to engineer the substrate binding cleft, seeking enhancements of PET hydrolysis. Enzyme kinetics revealed that both ANCUT1wt and ANCUT1N73V/L171Q (DM) were activated by MgCl2, increasing the dissociation constant of the substrate and maximal reaction rate. We found that in the presence of MgCl2, DM hydrolyzed different PET samples and released 9.1-fold more products than ANCUT1wt. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed a different hydrolysis mode of these enzymes, influenced by the polymer’s crystallinity and structure. Full article

Waste activated sludge (WAS), a byproduct of livestock wastewater treatment, poses significant disposal challenges due to its low biodegradability and potential environmental impact. Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers a sustainable approach for methane recovery and sludge stabilization. This study evaluates the biomethane potential (BMP) of WAS and its co-digestion with swine slurry (SS), water lily (Nymphaea spp.), and lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) shoot biomass to enhance methane yield. Batch BMP assays were conducted at substrate-to-inoculum (S/I) ratios of 1.0 and 0.5, with methane production kinetics analyzed using the modified Gompertz model. Mono-digestion of WAS yielded 259.35–460.88 NmL CH4/g VSadded, while co-digestion with SS, water lily, and lotus increased yields by 14.89%, 10.97%, and 16.89%, respectively, surpassing 500 NmL CH4/g VSadded. All co-digestion combinations exhibited synergistic effects (α > 1), enhancing methane production beyond individual substrate contributions. Lower S/I ratios improved methane yields and biodegradability, highlighting the role of inoculum availability. Co-digestion reduced the lag phase limitations of WAS and plant biomass, improving process efficiency. These findings demonstrate that co-digesting WAS with nutrient-rich co-substrates optimizes biogas production, supporting sustainable sludge management and renewable energy recovery in livestock wastewater treatment systems. Lactic acid (LA) synthesis through fermentation of food waste (FW) is an emerging techniques for utilizing perishable organic wastes with high value. Using food waste collected from a cafeteria as the substrate for fermentation, the current study was conducted by applying a micro electric field to the conventional LA fermentation process and performing open-ended electro-fermentation (EF) without sterilization and lactobacilli inoculation. Furthermore, the effects of pH adjustment on LA production were examined. The findings demonstrated that electrical stimulation enhances the electron transfer rate within the system, accelerates REDOX reactions, and thereby intensifies the lactic acid production process. The pH-regulated group produced LA and dissolved organic materials at considerably higher rates than the control group, which did not receive any pH modification. The maximum LA concentration and organic matter dissolution in the experimental group, where the pH was set to 7 every 12 h of fermentation, were 33.9 and 38.4 g/L, respectively. These values were 208 and 203% higher than those in the control group, indicating that the pH adjustment greatly aided the solubilization and hydrolysis of macromolecules. Among the several hydrolyzing bacteria (Actinobacteriota) that were enriched, Lactobacillus predominated, but Bifidobacterium also became a major genus in the neutral-acidic environment, and its abundance grew dramatically. This study provides a scientific basis for optimizing the LA process of FW. Full article

Continuous progress in the sector of additive manufacturing has drastically aided the design and fabrication of urban furniture, offering high levels of customization and adaptability. This work looks into the potential of 3D printing to transform urban public spaces by allowing for the creation of functional, aesthetically pleasing, and user-centered furniture solutions. Through additive manufacturing processes, urban furniture can be tailored to meet the unique needs of diverse communities, allowing for the extended usage of sustainable materials, modular designs, and smart technologies. The flexibility of 3D printing also promotes the fabrication of complex, intricate designs that would be difficult or cost-prohibitive using traditional methods. Additionally, 3D-printed furniture can be optimized for specific environmental conditions, providing solutions that enhance accessibility, improve comfort, and promote inclusivity. The various advantages of 3D-printed urban furniture are examined, including reduced material waste and the ability to rapidly prototype and iterate designs alongside the potential for on-demand, local production. By embedding sensors and IoT devices, 3D-printed furniture can also contribute to the development of smart cities, providing real-time data for urban management and improving the overall user experience. As cities continue to encourage and adopt sustainable and innovative solutions, 3D printing is believed to play a crucial role in future urban infrastructure planning. Full article

The increasing demand for food necessitates that agri-food systems adopt innovative techniques to enhance food production while optimizing the use of limited resources, such as water. In agriculture, hydrogels are being increasingly used to enhance water retention and reduce irrigation requirements. However, most of these materials are based on synthetic polymers that are not biodegradable. This raises serious environmental and health concerns, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable, biodegradable alternatives. Biomass-derived from agro-industrial waste presents a substantial potential for producing hydrogels, which can effectively function as water collectors and suppliers for crops. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the application of agro-industrial waste for the formulation of hydrogels. Additionally, it offers a critical analysis of the development of hydrogels utilizing natural and compostable materials. Agro-industrial and food waste, which are rich in hemicellulose and cellulose, have been utilized to enhance the mechanical properties and water absorption capacity of hydrogels. These biomaterials hold significant potential for the development of effective hydrogels in agricultural applications; they can be either hybrid or natural materials that exhibit efficacy in enhancing seed germination, improving water retention capabilities, and facilitating the controlled release of fertilizers. Natural hydrogels derived from agro-industrial waste present a sustainable technological alternative that is environmentally benign. Full article

Biomass and other solid wastes create potential environmental and health hazards in our modern society. Conversion of the wastes into energy presents a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation. However, the feasibility of the approach is limited by the challenges in material handling because of the special properties of the materials. Despite their critical importance, the complexities of material handling often evade scrutiny until operational implementation. This paper highlights the challenges inherent in standard solid material-handling processes, preceded by a concise review of common solid waste typologies and their physical properties, particularly those related to biomass and biowastes. It delves into the complexities of material flow, storage, compaction, agglomeration, separation, transport, and hazard management. Specialised characterisation techniques essential for informed process design are also discussed to mitigate operational risks. In conclusion, this paper emphasises the necessity of a tailored framework before the establishment of any further conversion processes. Given the heterogeneous nature of biomaterials, material-handling equipment must demonstrate adaptability to accommodate the substantial variability in material properties in large-scale production. This approach aims to enhance feasibility and efficacy of any energy conversion initiatives by using biomass or other solid wastes, thereby advancing sustainable resource utilisation and environmental stewardship. Coffee cherry pulp (CCP), a coffee by-product rich in pectin and phenolic compounds, serves as a valuable substrate for microbial enzyme production, improving the nutritional and antioxidant properties of poultry feed. This study evaluated the potential of Kluyveromyces marxianus ST5 to produce pectin-degrading enzymes using CCP. Under unoptimized conditions, the pectin lyase (PL) and polygalacturonase (PG) activities were 3.29 ± 0.22 and 6.32 ± 0.13 U/mL, respectively. Optimization using a central composite design (CCD) identified optimal conditions at 16.81% (w/v) CCP, 5.87% (v/v) inoculum size, pH 5.24, and 30 °C for 48 h, resulting in PL and PG activities of 9.17 ± 0.20 and 15.78 ± 0.14 U/mL, representing increases of 178.7% and 149.7% over unoptimized conditions. Fermented CCP was further evaluated using an in vitro chicken gastrointestinal digestion model. Peptide release increased by 66.2% compared with unfermented CCP. Antioxidant capacity also improved, with significant increases observed in DPPH (32.4%), ABTS (45.0%), and FRAP (42.3%) assays, along with an 11.1% increase in total phenolic content. These results demonstrate that CCP bioconversion by K. marxianus ST5 enhances digestibility and antioxidant properties, supporting its potential as a sustainable poultry feed additive and contributing to the valorization of agro-industrial waste. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable and widely adopted technology for the treatment of organic solid wastes (OSWs). However, AD efficiency varies significantly across different substrates, primarily due to differences in the microbial community and metabolic pathways. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the AD processes for four types of typical OSWs (i.e., sewage sludge, food waste, livestock manure, and straw), with an emphasis on their universal characteristics across global contexts, focusing mainly on the electron transfer mechanisms, essential microbial communities, and key metabolic pathways. Special attention was given to the mechanisms by which substrate-specific structural differences influence anaerobic digestion efficiency, with a focused analysis and discussion on how different components affect microbial communities and metabolic pathways. This study concluded that the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway, TCA cycle, and the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway serve as critical breakthrough points for enhancing methane production potential. This research not only provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing AD efficiency, but also offers crucial scientific insights for resource recovery and energy utilization of OSWs, making significant contributions to advancing sustainable waste management practices. The analysis is based on data from an energy audit conducted in 2023 at an industrial sunflower oil production facility. Reconstruction and modernization initiatives, which included the installation of high-performance, energy-efficient equipment, led to a 34% increase in energy efficiency. The findings highlight the importance of adjusting the technological parameters such as temperature, pressure, grinding level, and pressing time to reduce energy use and operational costs. Additionally, resource efficiency is improved through more effective raw material utilization and waste reduction. These strategies not only enhance the economic and environmental performance of sunflower oil production but also support sustainable development and competitiveness within the industry. The improvement reduces hexane use by approximately 2%, resulting in energy savings of 12–15 kWh/t of processed seeds and a reduction in CO2 emissions by 3–4 kg/t, thereby improving the environmental profile of sunflower oil production. Coal serves as the primary energy source for China, with production anticipated to reach 4.76 billion tons in 2024. However, the mining process generates a significant amount of gangue, with approximately 800 million tons produced in 2023 alone. Currently, China faces substantial gangue stockpiles, characterized by a low comprehensive utilization rate that fails to meet the country’s ecological and environmental protection requirements. The environmental challenges posed by the treatment and disposal of gangue are becoming increasingly severe. This review employs bibliometric analysis and theoretical perspectives to examine the latest advancements in gangue utilization, specifically focusing on the application of computational chemistry to elucidate the structural features and interaction mechanisms of coal gangue, and to collate how these insights have been leveraged in the literature to inform its potential utilization routes. The aim is to promote the effective resource utilization of this material, and key topics discussed include evaluating the risks of spontaneous combustion associated with gangue, understanding the mechanisms governing heavy metal migration, and modifying coal byproducts to enhance both economic viability and environmental sustainability. The case studies presented in this article offer valuable insights into the gangue conversion process, contributing to the development of more efficient and eco-friendly methods. By proposing a theoretical framework, this review will support ongoing initiatives aimed at the sustainable management and utilization of coal gangue, emphasizing the critical need for continued research and development in this vital area. This review uniquely combines bibliometric analysis with computational chemistry to identify new trends and gaps in coal waste utilization, providing a roadmap for future research. Full article

The food consumption stage, the final step in the food supply chain (FSC), where food has already undergone resource-intensive processes, plays a central role in the transition to a sustainable food system. Consumers’ food choices and consumption practices directly influence food demand, production methods, and resource use across the FSC. These factors affect global challenges such as overconsumption, malnutrition, hunger, and food waste (FW)—issues integral to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, this study aims to identify key aspects of the food consumption stage that influence the shift toward sustainability and to develop a conceptual framework to guide this transition. To achieve this, an integrative literature review (ILR), supported by bibliometric analysis and narrative review elements, was conducted to strengthen the conceptual foundation. The results reveal four central aspects: FW and its reduction, the need for dietary shifts, changes in consumer behaviour, and policy reform, highlighting the consumer and their behaviour as the central connecting element. Based on the findings, a framework was developed linking the identified problems with targeted solutions, which can be implemented through various tools that also act as drivers of change, enhancing sustainable food consumption, food system sustainability, and the achievement of global SDGs. Valorization of Coffee Silverskin via Integrated Biorefinery for the Production of Bioactive Peptides and Xylooligosaccharides: Functional and Prebiotic Properties

Coffee silverskin (CS), a by-product generated during coffee roasting, contains high levels of xylan hemicellulose and protein, making it a promising substrate for functional ingredient production. This study developed an integrated bioprocess to simultaneously produce bioactive peptides and xylooligosaccharides (CS-XOS) from CS. Conventional alkaline extraction (CAE) under optimized conditions (1.0 M NaOH, 90 °C, 30 min) yielded 80.64 mg of protein per gram of CS and rendered the solid residue suitable for XOS production. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the extracted protein using protease_SE5 generated low-molecular-weight peptides (0.302 ± 0.01 mg/mL), including FLGY, FYDTYY, and FDYGKY. These peptides were non-toxic, exhibited in vitro antioxidant activity (0–50%), and showed ACE-inhibitory activities of 60%, 26%, and 79%, and DPP-IV-inhibitory activities of 19%, 18%, and 0%, respectively. Concurrently, the alkaline-treated CS solid residue (ACSS) was hydrolyzed using recombinant endo-xylanase, yielding 52.5 ± 0.08 mg of CS-XOS per gram of ACSS. The CS-XOS exhibited prebiotic effects by enhancing the growth of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (μmax 0.100–0.122 h−1), comparable to commercial XOS. This integrated bioprocess eliminates the need for separate processing lines, enhances resource efficiency, and provides a sustainable strategy for valorizing agro-industrial waste. The co-produced peptides and CS-XOS offer significant potential as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals. Full article
