Accurately identifying coherent vortex structures (CVSs) in backward-facing step (BFS) flows remains a challenge, particularly in reconciling visual streamlines with mathematical criteria. In this study, high-resolution velocity fields were captured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a pressurized BFS setup. Instantaneous streamlines reveal distinct spiral patterns, vortex centers, and saddle points, consistent with physical definitions of vortices and offering intuitive guidance for CVS detection. However, conventional vortex identification methods often fail to reproduce these visual features. To address this, an improved Q-criterion method is proposed, based on the normalization of the velocity gradient tensor. This approach enhances the rotational contribution while suppressing shear effects, leading to improved agreement in vortex position and shape with those observed in streamlines. While the normalization process alters the representation of physical vortex strength, the method bridges qualitative visualization and quantitative analysis. This streamline-consistent identification framework facilitates robust CVS detection in separated flows and supports further investigations in vortex dynamics and turbulence control. Full article

As the core equipment for efficient wastewater treatment, the internal structure of microporous aeration bioreactors directly determines the mass transfer efficiency and treatment performance. Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, this study explores the optimization mechanism of a Spherical Grid-Structured on the internal flow field of the reactor through a 3D numerical simulation system, aiming to improve the aeration efficiency and resource utilization. This study used a combination of experimental and numerical simulations to compare and analyze different configurations of the Spherical Grid-Structure. The simulation results show that the optimal equilibrium of the flow field inside the reactor is achieved when the diameter of the grid sphere is 2980 mm: the average flow velocity is increased by 22%, the uniformity of the pressure distribution is improved by 25%, and the peak turbulent kinetic energy is increased by 30%. Based on the Kalman vortex street theory, the periodic vortex induced by the grid structure refines the bubble size to 50–80 microns, improves the oxygen transfer efficiency by 20%, increases the spatial distribution uniformity of bubbles by 35%, and significantly reduces the dead zone volume from 28% to 16.8%, which is a decrease of 40%. This study reveals the quantitative relationship between the structural parameters of the grid and the flow field characteristics through a pure numerical simulation, which provides a theoretical basis and quantifiable optimization scheme for the structural design of the microporous aeration bioreactor, which is of great significance in promoting the development of low-energy and high-efficiency wastewater treatment technology. The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

A combination of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-based computations and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations is presented to study the dispersion and clustering of inertial particles in a forced homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow and to analyze the relative importance of the various forces acting on particles. The particle dynamics are investigated across a wide range of particle-to-fluid density ratios (from 0.01 to 1000) and Stokes numbers (from 1.4 × 10−6 to 55.4), at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 33.6. Particle clustering is quantified using Voronoï tessellations. Results confirm that clustering intensity is maximized at Stokes numbers around unity, where particles preferentially accumulate in low-vorticity regions. Particle dynamics within the turbulent flow considered here vary fundamentally with density and size, even among tracer-like particles. Low-density and neutrally buoyant particles mimic tracers via either velocity matching or acceleration balance, while dense particles follow inertia-dominated dynamics. Full article

The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

Greenhouses are applied to mitigate the deleterious effects of inclement weather, which facilitates the optimal growth and development of the crops. South China has a climate characterized by high temperature and high humidity, and the temperature and relative humidity inside a Venlo greenhouse are higher than those in the atmosphere. In this paper, the numerical model of the flow distribution of a Venlo greenhouse in South China was established using the CFD method, which mainly applied the DO model, the k-e turbulence model, and the porous medium model. The porous resistance characteristics of tomatoes were obtained through experimental research. The inertial resistances of tomato plants in the x, y, and z directions were 80,000,000, 18,000,000, and 120,000,000, respectively; the viscous resistances of tomato plants in the x, y, and z directions were 0.43, 0.60, and 0.63, respectively. The porosity of tomato plants was 0.996. The average difference between the temperature of the established numerical model and the experimental temperature was less than 0.11 °C, and the average relative error was 2.72%. This research also studied the effects of five management and structure parameters on the velocity and temperature distribution in a greenhouse. The optimal inlet velocity is 1.32 m/s, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.23% and 1.18%, respectively. The optimal skylight opening is 1.76 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 10.68% and 0.88%, respectively. The optimal side window opening is 0.67 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.25% and 2.10%, respectively. The optimal side window height is 1.18 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.50% and 1.33%, respectively. The optimal planting interval is 1.40 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 15.29% and 0.20%, respectively. The results provide a reference for the design and management of Venlo greenhouses in South China. Full article

Differential Mechanism of 3D Motions of Falling Debris in Tunnels Under Extreme Wind Environments Induced by a Single Train and by Trains Crossing

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) free surface model to predict incompressible flow around a spur dike in a meandering channel bend, which is highly 3D due to the presence of curvature effects. The model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations using an explicit projection method. The 3D grid system is built from a two-dimensional grid by adding dozens of horizontal layers in the vertical direction. Numerical simulations consider four test cases with different spur dike locations in the same meandering channel bend with the same Froude numbers as 0.22. Four turbulence models, the standard k-ε model, the k-ω model, the RNG k-ε model and a nonlinear k-ε model, are implemented in our three-dimensional free surface model. The performance of these turbulence models within the RANS framework is assessed. Comparisons between the model results and experimental data show that the nonlinear k-ε model behaves better than the three other models in general. Based on the results obtained by the nonlinear k-ε model, the highly 3D flow field downstream of the spur dike was revealed by presenting velocity vectors at representative cross-sections and streamlines at the surface and bottom layers. Meanwhile, the 3D characteristics of the downstream separation zone were also investigated. In addition, to highlight the advantage of the nonlinear turbulence model, comparisons of velocity vectors at representative cross-sections between the results obtained by the linear and nonlinear k-ε models are also presented. Maintaining the required relative humidity values in the vehicle cabin is an important HVAC task, along with considerations related to the temperature, velocity, air pressure and noise. Deviation from the optimal values worsens the psycho-physiological state of the driver and affects the energy efficiency of the train. In this study, a model of liquid film formation on and removal from various cabin surfaces was constructed using the fundamental Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations. A special transport model based on the liquid vapor diffusion equation was used to simulate the air environment inside the cabin. The evaporation and condensation of surface films were simulated using the Euler film model, which directly considers liquid–gas and gas–liquid transitions. Numerical results were obtained using the RANS equations and a turbulence model by means of the finite volume method in Ansys CFD. Conjugate fields of temperature, velocity and moisture concentration were constructed for various time intervals, and the dependence values for the film thicknesses on various surfaces relative to time were determined. The verification was conducted in comparison with the experimental data, based on the protocol for measuring the microclimate indicators in workplaces, as applied to the train cabin: the average ranges encompassed temperature changes from 11% to 18%, and relative humidity ranges from 16% to 26%. Comparison with the results of other studies, without considering the phase transition and condensation, shows that, for the warm mode, the average air temperature in the cabin with condensation is 12.5% lower than without condensation, which is related to the process of liquid evaporation from the heated walls. The difference in temperature values for the model with and without condensation ranged from −12.5% to +4.9%. We demonstrate that, with an effective mode of removing condensate film from the window surface, including recirculation modes, the energy consumption of the climate control system improves significantly, but this requires a more accurate consideration of thermodynamic parameters and relative humidity. Thus, considering the moisture condensation model reveals that this variable can significantly affect other parameters of the microclimate in cabins: in particular, the temperature. This means that it should be considered in the numerical modeling, along with the basic heat transfer equations. Full article

This study investigates the flow dynamics and local scour around a Reef Cube® artificial reef deployed in Torbay, UK, using computational fluid dynamics. The flow is modelled using Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with a k-ω SST turbulence model. A novel hydro-morphodynamic model employing the generalized internal boundary method in HELYX (OpenFOAM-based) is used to simulate scour development. Model performance was validated against experimental data for flow fields, bed shear stress, and local scour. Flow simulations across various scenarios demonstrated that parameters such as the orientation angle and arrangement of Reef Cubes significantly influence flow patterns, bed shear stress, and habitat suitability. The hydro-morphodynamic model was used to simulate scouring around a reef cube in the Torbay marine environment. Results indicate that typical tidal flow velocity flow in the region is barely sufficient to initiate sediment motion, whereas extreme flow events, represented by doubling the mean flow velocity, significantly accelerate scour development, producing holes up to ten times deeper. These findings underscore the importance of considering extreme flow conditions in scour analyses due to their potential impact on the stability and failure risk of AR projects. Full article

Various nature-based solutions (NbS)—such as constructed wetlands, drainage ditches, and vegetated buffer strips—have recently demonstrated strong potential for mitigating pollutant transport in open channels and river systems. Numerical modeling is a widely adopted and effective approach for assessing the performance of these interventions. This study presents the first development of a two-dimensional (2D) meshless advection–diffusion model based on an Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework, specifically designed to simulate passive pollutant transport in open channel flows. The proposed model marks a pioneering application of the ESPH technique to environmental pollutant transport problems. It couples the 2D depth-averaged shallow water equations with an advection–diffusion equation to represent both fluid motion and pollutant concentration dynamics. A uniform particle arrangement ensures that each fluid particle interacts symmetrically with eight neighboring particles for flux computation. To represent the pollutant transport process, the dispersion coefficient is defined as the sum of molecular and turbulent diffusion components. The turbulent diffusion coefficient is calculated using a prescribed turbulent Schmidt number and the eddy viscosity obtained from a Smagorinsky-type mixing-length turbulence model. Three analytical case studies, including one-dimensional transcritical open channel flow, 2D isotropic and anisotropic diffusion in still water, and advection–diffusion in a 2D uniform flow, are employed to verify the model’s accuracy and convergence. The model demonstrates first-order convergence, with relative root mean square errors (RRMSEs) of approximately 0.2% for water depth and velocity, and 0.1–0.5% for concentration. Additionally, the model is applied to a laboratory experiment involving 2D pollutant dispersion in a 90° junction channel. The simulated results show good agreement with measured velocity and concentration distributions. These findings indicate that the developed model is a reliable and effective tool for evaluating the performance of NbS in mitigating pollutant transport in open channels and river systems. A four-bladed helical turbine with a 20 cm rotor diameter and blockage ratio of 53.57% was tested in an open water channel under a flow rate of 180 m3/h, corresponding to a Reynolds number of approximately 90 × 103. Velocity measurements were collected at 13 downstream cross-sections using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter, with each point sampled repeatedly. Standard error analysis was applied to quantify measurement uncertainty. Complementary numerical simulations were conducted in ANSYS Fluent using a steady-state k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model, with a mesh of 4.7 million elements and mesh independence confirmed. Velocity deficit and turbulence intensity were employed as primary parameters to characterize the wake structure, while the analysis also focused on the recovery of cross-sectional velocity profiles to validate the extent of wake influence. Experimental results revealed a maximum velocity deficit of over 40% in the near-wake region, which gradually decreased with downstream distance, while turbulence intensity exceeded 50% near the rotor and dropped below 10% beyond 4 m. In comparison, numerical findings showed a similar trend but with lower peak velocity deficits of 16.6%. The root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) between experimental and numerical mean velocity profiles were calculated as 0.04486 and 0.03241, respectively, demonstrating reasonable agreement between the datasets. Extended simulations up to 30 m indicated that flow profiles began to resemble ambient conditions around 18–20 m. The findings highlight the importance of accurately identifying the downstream distance at which the wake effect fully dissipates, as this is crucial for determining appropriate inter-turbine spacing. The study also discusses potential sources of discrepancies between experimental and numerical results, as well as the limitations of the modeling approach. Full article

Renormalization Group and Effective Field Theories in Magnetohydrodynamics

We briefly review the recent developments in magnetohydrodynamics, which in particular deal with the evolution of magnetic fields in turbulent plasmas. We especially emphasize (i) the necessity and utility of renormalizing equations of motion in turbulence where velocity and magnetic fields become Hölder singular; (ii) the breakdown of Laplacian determinism of classical physics (spontaneous stochasticity or super chaos) in turbulence; and (iii) the possibility of eliminating the notion of magnetic field lines in magnetized plasmas, using instead magnetic path lines as trajectories of Alfvénic wave packets. These methodologies are then exemplified with their application to the problem of magnetic reconnection—rapid change in magnetic field pattern that accelerates plasma—a ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysics and laboratory plasmas. Renormalizing rough velocity and magnetic fields on any finite scale l in turbulence inertial range, to remove singularities, implies that magnetohydrodynamic equations should be regarded as effective field theories with running parameters depending upon the scale l. A high wave-number cut-off should also be introduced in fluctuating equations of motion, e.g., Navier–Stokes, which makes them effective, low-wave-number field theories rather than stochastic differential equations. A concentric double-flange butterfly valve (DN-500, PN-10) was analyzed to examine its dynamic behavior and internal fluid flow across multiple opening angles. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was employed to determine natural frequencies, mode shapes, and effective mass participation factors (EMPFs) for valve positions at 30°, 60°, and 90°. The valve geometry was discretized using a curvature-based mesh with linear elastic isotropic properties for 1023 carbon steel. Lower-order vibration modes produced global deformations primarily along the valve disk, while higher-order modes showed localized displacement near the shaft–bearing interface, indicating coupled torsional and translational dynamics. The highest EMPF in the X-direction occurred at 1153.1 Hz with 0.2631 kg, while the Y-direction showed moderate contributions peaking at 0.1239 kg at 392.06 Hz. The Z-direction demonstrated lower influence, with a maximum EMPF of 0.1218 kg. Modes 3 and 4 were critical for potential resonance zones due to significant mass contributions and directional sensitivity. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation analyzed flow behavior, pressure drops, and turbulence under varying valve openings. At a lower opening angle, significant flow separation, recirculation zones, and high turbulence were observed. At 90°, the flow became more streamlined, resulting in a reduction in pressure losses and stabilizing velocity profiles. Full article

Double-suction centrifugal pumps are extensively employed in industrial applications owing to their high efficiency, low vibration, superior cavitation resistance, and operational durability. This study analyzes how impeller oblique cutting angles (0°, 6°, 9°, 12°) affect a double-suction pump at a fixed 4% trimming ratio and constant average post-trim diameter. Numerical simulations and tests reveal that under low-flow (0.7Qd) and design-flow conditions, the flat-cut (0°) minimizes reflux ratio and maximizes efficiency by aligning blade outlet flow with the mainstream. Increasing oblique cutting angles disrupts this alignment, elevating reflux and reducing efficiency. Conversely, at high flow (1.3Qd), the 12° bevel optimizes outlet flow, achieving peak efficiency. Pressure pulsation at the volute tongue (P11) peaks at the blade-passing frequency, with amplitudes significantly higher for 9°/12° bevels than for 0°/6°. The flat-cut suppresses wake vortices and static–rotor interaction, but oblique cutting angle choice critically influences shaft-frequency pulsation. Entropy analysis identifies the volute as the primary loss source. Larger oblique cutting angles intensify wall effects, increasing total entropy; pump chamber losses rise most sharply due to worsened outlet velocity non-uniformity and turbulent dissipation. The flat-cut yields minimal entropy at Qd. These findings provide a basis for tailoring impeller trimming to specific operational requirements. Furthermore, the systematic analysis provides critical guidance for impeller trimming strategies in other double-suction pumps and pumps as turbines in micro hydropower plants. Full article
